When describing his brother, Joel describes his brother having a "Golden Mogan David", however when we see Jules, he doesn't have one.
Chris-in-the-morning: There's a dark side to each and every human soul. We wish we were Obi-Wan Kenobi, and for the most part we are, but there's a little Darth Vader in all of us. Thing is, this ain't no either/or proposition. We're talking about dialectics, the good and the bad merging into us. You can run but you can't hide. My experience? Face the darkness, stare it down. Own it. As brother Nietzsche said, being human is a complicated gig. Give that old dark night of the soul a hug! Howl the eternal yes!
Although filmed, but not aired, there was a storyline with Holling going to Seattle to pay back a debt to an old friend, named Buddy. [It can be seen on the Northern Exposure Complete Third Season DVD Set.]

This episode was originally intended for the second season, but it was re-edited and extra footage added to make it stronger and more proper for Halloween. Of course Rob Morrow assumed the dual-role of Joel & Jules.
Title: Jules et Joel The episode's title is a play on Francois Truffault's classic film Jules et Jim (1961). An energetic exploration of life, love and art centred around an exuberant menage a troi that turns into a tragic love triangle, the movie has been hailed as one of the masterpieces of the French New Wave.
