The theme of reclaiming the past is well blended in this episode. Joel gets a surprise visit from his ex-fiancee Elaine, Chris gets reacquainted with his African-American half-brother Bernard, and Bernard sets out to discover his African heritage.

Joel finds a way to overcome his bitterness at having been unceremoniously dumped by Elaine, and makes peace with his memories of Elaine after the two reach an understanding.

Falling into her own trap, Maggie (in order to appear disinterested) virtually forces Joel and Elaine to make amends , but ends up panicking when they actually do.

John Corbett (Chris) and Richard Cummings Jr. (Bernard) share a strong on-camera chemistry. One of the most ingenious things about the series is the imaginative dream sequences, and the two African dancers dreams in this episode are among the most memorable. Chris and Bernard's identical twin-like psychic connection is an original and provocative way to break down racial stereotypes.

Adam Arkin (as Adam) delivers a particularly great performance as he briefly transforms the Brick into a gourmet bistro.moreless

Joel: I've endured all this at the hands of the font of human kindness currently overflowing in your truck.

    • Chris: Einstein said God doesn't play dice with the universe, but I don't know--maybe not as a whole, but I think he gets a pretty big kick out of messing in peoples' back yards.
