This episode tried hard, but fell short. In The Final Frontier, the primary line is about Holling's angst upon find that his old nemesis, Jesse the Bear, has died. The secondary plot hinges upon the insatiable curiosity of the townspeople (Maggie in particular) over the contents of an unclaimed parcel, addressed to a recipient unknown to anyone. Maurice gets a comeuppance when he believes a group of Japanese tourists has made the trip to Cicely to meet him, only to find out that the main attraction was the aurora borealis (northern lights).
There are too many far-fetched aspects of the stories to keep me invested in them. Holling's tale, of fighting mano-a-mano with a huge grizzly bear and biting his toe off, stretched far beyond the bounds of credibility.
The parcel story line is equally mediocre. The chance of a package circling the globe like a chain letter is infinitesimal. Equally unbelievable is the obsessive desire to open the box, even to the point of calling a town meeting on whether they should break the law to do so.
The bright spots are Chris's radio monologues about exploration and discovery, but they don't save it from being a mediocre episode.
