This episode should have been the last of the series, and it certainly the last one that have cared to watch. Joel and Maggie's "hero's journey" is a wonderful interputation of the classical mythical journey, and the script for this part of the show is beyond excellent! That portion of the episode that deals with Chris and Dr. Capra is as bad as the portion that deals with Joel and Maggie, but that in no way diminishes the impact of this issue, for me at least. . . it is the perfect ending to Joel and Maggies relationship, and would have been the perfect ending to the seriesmoreless
  • The episode that SHOULD have ended the series, this brings Joel (and Maggie) full circle from episode 1.

The episode that SHOULD have ended the series, this brings Joel (and Maggie) full circle from episode 1. Joel returns to the world a changed man, changed by Alaska, by Cicely, and by each and every person he's met in the past six years. Maggie comes to terms with who she is, and how she can be content without a desperate need to define her role in life or justify her decisions. If you are watching the series, don't even bother with the drivel that comes after this; the writing is poor and stiff, and other then the last musical montage in the last episode, forgettable and disappointing.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Joel tells Maggie he needs a lift to the Aluetian Islands, specifically Bogoslof Island, in his search for the "Jeweled City of the North". Maggie responds, "there's nothing there". The real Bogoslof Island is a tiny 1 mile x 1/3 mile speck of land 30+ miles north of Umnak and Unalaska Islands (of the Fox Islands group). It is a designated wildlife sanctuary and is completely uninhabited.

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Maggie: Did you hear about that woman who walked around the world? Took her three years. Wonder how many pair of shoes she went through.

    • Maggie: I came just to keep you from becoming a popsicle for some polar bear.
Joel: Wait a minute, are you telling me you're not the slightest bit curious? I mean, you don't get goosebumps thinking we might, we might make some incredible discovery out here? Be like stumbling into King Tut's tomb, or or unearthing Pompeii. Come on! You don't, you're not excited by that, that possibility at all?

    • Maggie: God, Fleischman, you know, if you want to search for the Ark of the Covenant, that's one thing, but does it have to be on the dark side of the moon?
Joel: Hey, you aren't going to find a lost city in a Michelin guide, now are ya? Now look, judging by the map it's going to take at least three days to reach what they call the Stone of St. Sebastian.
Maggie: Stone of St. Sebastian, right.
Joel: Yeah, I hope I brought enough food.

    • Maggie: I used to think of all the billions of people in the world, and of all those people, how was I going to meet the right ones? The right ones to be my friends, the right one to be my husband. Now I just believe you meet the people you're supposed to meet.

  • NOTES (1)

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Adam makes a couple comments during the test to allow Joel across the bridge that alludes to his (Adam Arkin) new role as brain surgeon Aaron Shutt on Chicago Hope and Rob Morrow's role in the feature film Quiz Show.
