Episode Summary

Prisons for Profit
The U.S. ranks number one in the world for the greatest percentage of citizens behind bars. One out of every hundred American's is incarcerated. The government cannot build prisons fast enough and provide all of the necessary goods and services needed for prisoners. Private companies and corporations are scooping up this overflow and maximizing their profits at the expense of public safety. Criminal policy analyst Judy Greene illustrates the higher rate human rights infractions in privatized jails like Crowley Correctional Facility run by Corrections Corporation. Green explains new sentencing reforms due to the financial lobbying power of Corrections Corporation with 2007 earnings of 1.4 billion dollars.moreless
