Episode Summary

Taxing the Poor
Are poor Americans paying a higher percentage of their income than the wealthy? Many state policies are turning to lowering property taxes and raising sales taxes to generate revenue. A look at three different Alabama families showcases the impact that a ten percent tax on groceries has on two financially struggling families. A financially secure suburban household benefits from the property tax cut pays less of a percentage of their total income on taxes for the same goods. The findings illustrate that the two lower income families pay a higher percentage of their income than the wealthy family, making the wealthier family realize that they do not mind paying higher property taxes if it means they are paying their fair share.moreless
