      • James Tolkan, well-known for his playing authority figures, gets to play again in full character mode as Commander Cyrus Quinn in this episode.

    • ALLUSIONS (2)

      • Heart of Darkness
This episode's title refers to Joseph Conrad's novelette of that title in which a journey is made upriver (in that case the Congo) to an ominous mystery man. The episode plot also nods to the most famous adaption of Conrad's tale, Francis Ford Coppola's feature film Apocalypse Now, in which those making the river journey are a military unit seeking a rogue commander who has founded a personal army.

      • When Knox lines up the recruits at the beginning of the episode to assign them numbers, Tom's number ends up being 6. This is a sly reference to The Prisoner, a show which series creator Larry Hertzog has often stated was a major influence in the creation of Nowhere Man.
