When Don Eppes arrives at the shooting of the two drug dealers, LAPD Detective Cates tells him the preliminary tests matched the shell casings to Epps stolen Glock. To do so, the recovered shells had to be collected, taken back to a lab and compared under a microscope to the ballistics records on file for Don's Glock. It is not feasible that this would be accomplished is such a short time that police are still at the murder scene with the bodies on the ground.
