The title "Charlie Don't Surf" is a line from the Vietnam War movie Apocalypse Now. Lt. Colonel Kilgore, a crazy surfing fan, tells his men to surf on a beach very close to a village where fighting is going on. The men protest, saying Charlie (rebel forces) could target them. He responds by yelling "Charlie don't surf!" Also, the director of this episode, Emilio Estevez, is the son of Martin Sheen the principal actor of the aforesaid movie.
