This episode was originally scheduled to be the fourth episode of the season, but it was pushed back to the eighth slot because of its content.
On September 18, 2008, a commuter train collided with a freight train in the San Fernando Valley in California. Over two dozen people were killed, and many more injured. This episode had already been written and filmed before the tragedy.
When "Thirty-Six Hours" finally did air, David Krumholtz (Charlie Eppes) came on screen before the episode and warned that though these scenes had been filmed weeks before, they might prove to be traumatic to those affected by the real accident. He expressed condolences from the entire Numb3rs cast and crew to the victims and families affected by the tragedy.
