This was the first episode of NYPD Blue that I’ve ever seen. I’m a big Dann Florek fan so when I found out that he had a guest spot, I had to catch this episode (and he was wonderful in the 2 scenes that he was in). The two females that were raped and murdered in their apartment worked as strippers in a local strip club. The suspects ranged from a violent ex-boyfriend to a creepy guy with a breast fetish. Dann Florek played Gary Hogan in this episode, and after one look, every woman in the police station seemed to give him a wide berth and hide her breasts with anything handy from file folders to overcoats. This was an interesting change for him considering his role as Capt. Cragen on SVU where he’s the one catching the pervs. His character was very entertaining.

I enjoyed the camaraderie between Sipowicz & Simone who caught the rape/murder case, the way they would just give each other a look and roll their eyes at the witness’s statements. This was demonstrated in the first scene of the episode with the super who had found the bodies of the two women in their apartment. He was intent on telling the entire situation with as many words and details as possible while the detectives just wanted the straight facts and to move along with their investigation. The dynamic between Medavoy & Martinez was particularly interesting as well. Sheedy told Medavoy that a man named Carmine had asked him about hiring a hitman to off his ex-wife’s new boyfriend. Medavoy wanted to pose undercover as the hitman. It was very obvious that he wanted to work undercover and have the attention all to himself, even if the undercover job was not suited to him. This was my least favorite of the 3 cases in the episode, though Carmine was funny pointing out that just because he had an Italian mother that named him “Carmine” didn’t mean that he knew a hitman or that he would even hire one because he was actually a wimp.

An immigrant maid came in to report that she thought her boss was going to have her deported and fired for stealing. She had donated some soup cans to charity and the lady had hidden a diamond necklace in one of the cans (one of those special items, like shaving cream cans, that you buy to hide your valuables). Diane was a little exasperated with her “lost jewelry” case, mostly with the rich lady who tried to blame her immigrant maid for her own stupidity. It seemed to be a waste of her time, and frankly she was probably right. She tracked down a guy who worked for the charity who was selling donated items on the side for his own profit and found the necklace. Interesting show. I would watch again.moreless
