GOOF: Owen's friends say that his "date night" with his wife is every three months. However, when Owen and his wife go to the bar, Janet the bartender says that date night attire has changed from last month.
Ikey: (to Eddie about Darcy) You are like the flu only with a zipper.
Phil: (talking about peanut allergies) There's about a 60% chance of it originating from a genetic inheritance.
Ikey: So, there's a 40% chance it don't!
Nick: Well done, Pythagoras.
Ikey: (Scoffs) Thanks for playing. Pythagoras was a winged horse, Greek myth style
Nick: That would be Pegasus!
Eddie: So you want to go check out my singing koala bear in my attic.
Janet: Are you asking me out?
Eddie: Yea, I guess I am. Why don't you think about it and let me know.
Janet: Tell you what, I'll think about it.
Nick: Look, I'm trying to confront this stuff that I ran from years ago. And I'm willing to face anything, anything that comes my way. I will not leave you, dean Etwood. Or your students either. This time I'm not leaving anything until it's ready to be left.
Dean Leslie Etwood: Well, what an inspirational tale. But right now, Mr. Garrett, I'm going back to sleep.
Nick: Game over.
Ronnie: Not true. I think we can do much better. Forget about Hannah and aging documents. Nothing beats a live testimonial. It's like I always say--"If you can't deliver the bacon, bring them the pig!"
Nick: You always say that?
Ronnie: Well, I will from now on.
(The Commander arrives with a cat who he just picked up off the street at Knights Ridge Veterinary Care, only to get a closer look at Sam)
Hannah: This is yours, Mr. Garrett?
The Commander: Yeah, that's right.
Hannah: How old is this cat?
The Commander: He's 7.
Hannah: This cat is a female.
The Commander: (smiles) Yeah.
Hannah: And, um, what's her name?
The Commander: (looks at a picture of a sunrise on the wall) Sunrise.
Hannah: (notices he made up the name) And, um, what's wrong with Sunrise?
The Commander: I don't know. He's just a little... sluggish.
Hannah: She.
The Commander: She.
Hannah: Well I'll take a look at her.
The Commander: Ok that's great well I guess I'll be going now (leaves the office)
Sam: Mom why did he bring in Buster?
Hannah: I don't know (Turns to look at a confused coworker) This is our cat.
Aubrey: And thus, the arsonist returns to the scene of his last great place.
Nick: Going down in flames does seem to be the motive.
Dean Leslie Etwood: A teacher by nature is a leader and a leader is someone who embraces their life. Not one who runs away from it. In all the words Mr. Garrett, my students have nothing to learn from you.
Dean Leslie Etwood: What makes you think you can actually teach? And please, don't tell me it's because you wrote a popular novel.
Nick: No! No. But... the journey. Getting there. The journey that those students wish to embark upon. I can share my experience.
Dean Leslie Etwood: Then let's talk about that journey.
Nick: Let's talk about it.
Dean Leslie Etwood: The, ahm, epic struggle of a coward who left his home, wrote a book about the friends and family that he abandoned for reasons unknown and now is afraid to face his own life.
Owen: Hey, Nick's stayin', Eddie! Isn't that great?
Eddie: (avoiding the subject) I'm gonna get my truck at Celli's.
Hannah: All I'm asking from you Nick is just please, please, please, PLEASE!, just don't UPSET THE APPLECART!
The Commander: Hey! (takes a gun away from Ronnie) Just because you are an idiot, it doesn't mean you have to act like one.
Penny Johnson Jerald takes over the recurring role of Dean Leslie Etwood, previously played by Bill Nunn. Apparently, the producers decided to make the character a female character, but they already filmed the pilot, so they just decided to change the actor.
Featured Music:
"The Pretender" by Jackson Browne
"Back to Oregon" by Dan Zweben
"Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison
"Killer on the Loose" by Thin Lizzy
"Chemical Reaction" by Low Five
"Miss the Days" by The Penfifteen Club
"She's So Pretty" by Kyf Brewer
Aubrey: (to Eddie) You know I'd have pegged you more as a John Cougar Mellencamp guy than a John Cougar guy.
Reference to a musician who called himself first John Cougar, then John Cougar Mellencamp and finally John Mellencamp. Aubrey associates the name changes with changes in his music.
Ikey: (After Nick corrects him) Guy spends 10 years in New York City. Thinks he's Anderson Cooper 360.
Anderson Cooper 360° is a fast-moving, surprising and provocative alternative to the typical network evening newscast.
Episode Title: "The Pros and Cons of Upsetting the Applecart"
The title is a reference to Hannah's line in this episode in which she asks Nick not to upset the applecart.
