  • The first run of the 1999 series was very good and is, I am told, largely untouched on the DVD. However, the re-edited version that was aired some time later was weakened significantly by the attempts to fit it into a shorter time slot. Beware.moreless

The original edit of this series was very good. The adaptation was fluent, the writing lean and concise and the production of a high standard. The performances were consistently good with moments of brilliance from various quarters.

The re-edit that occurred was a very bad idea and ruined a very good series, it was overly compressed and lost coherence. Sadly, I haven't seen the original edit broadcast again and doubt I will so I would stick with the DVD, which I am told, is the original cut (but I cannot promise this myself as I have not seen it).

Originally, a very good adaptation of the classic novel with good turns by the cast. A good watch if you can get it.moreless
