      Oliver is born in poverty to an unwed mother and is soon orphaned. He grows up in a workhouse, eating gruel and performing back breaking work. He is eventually sold to an abusive undertaker. Oliver runs away to London where he meets a young thief, The Artful Dodger. He is introduced to a band of criminals and pickpockets ran by Fagin. He also meets a sympathetic prostitute named Nancy and her thuggish lover, Bill Sikes. Oliver also meets Mr. Monks, who has less than altruistic interest in him. Oliver is sentenced to death after being arrested as part of Fagin's gang. He is rescued by Mr. Brownlow.moreless

      The elderly Mrs. Maylie doesn't approve of a romance between her adopted daughter, Rose, and her natural-born son, Harry.
