  • The story of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, an artistic movement in Victorian England.

A typically flamboyant Ken Russell arts biopic for the BBC, made straight after his second cinema feature, "Billion Dollar Brain" (which opened a matter of days before this programme was first aired). Russell had a harder time than usual, he later claimed, because some of the actors were poor - although as the many non-professionals involved were all deliberately chosen by him, this seems an unfair comment. This film is still a great deal more entertaining than the 2009 BBC mini-series about the PRB, and Oliver Reed, in process of becoming an film star, makes a fine Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The photography is particularly impressive, and Clive Goodwin contributes a notable cameo as the lovelorn John Ruskin.
