One of the best ghost stories ever made for television. Michael Hordern is just fine as the dotty old university don who believes that "there are more things in philosophy than are dreamed of in heaven and earth", but finds that his patronising superiority to other guests in an out-of-season hotel is no protection against... what? It is precisely the undefined nature of the apparition which begins to bother the Professor that makes it so terrifying. After finding, whilst out walking, an antique whistle buried in the muck, he is foolish enough to blow it - a simple act which, incomprehensibly, conjures a phantom - or a demon - or an hallucination - or something. Hordern's final moments - as he repeatedly (but unconvincingly) denies the existence of what he has just seen - are unforgettable.
