Episode Recap

David is at the station and Emma gives him a cup of coffee. He hopes that his missing wife is okay, and Emma tells him to worry about himself since he is the likely suspect. She shows him the unexplained phone call to Kathryn, but David has no explanation for why it's on the record. Emma isn't convinced but tells him to go home, admitting that they don't even know if there has been a crime yet, but advises him to get a lawyer.

At the diner, Ruby chats with August and they talk about all the places that he's traveled. As August describes Nepal, Granny calls Ruby over but she ignores her boss. Granny finally tells her to stop flirting and pounds on the countertop.

-----

Peter, the local blacksmith's boy, comes to see his lover, Red, and she tells him to keep quiet because Granny is in the other room. He says that she has to get out of there and offers to go with her no matter what, impressing Red. Peter asks her to come out but Red says that Granny will never let her go. He asks for a single kiss and Red grants it before going back inside. Meanwhile, several hunters have arrived to see Granny and explain that they're going after the wolf that is killing their sheep. Red wants to go with them but Granny insists that she stay and wear red, because red frightens wolf. Granny insists that the hunters are on a fool's quest and insults Peter as a wastrel, and then has Red help her seal the house against any intruder.

-----

Ruby complains that Granny humiliated her, and Granny wants her to work on Saturdays to train in paperwork. When Ruby complains, Granny points out that there are plenty of other things she does, but Ruby wants to go out and see the world. She finally tells Granny that she's quitting and storms out the door.

-----

The next morning, Red checks on Granny to make sure that she's okay. She starts to go out without her red hood and Granny yells at her to put it on. She then goes to collect eggs from the chickens and hears something moving in the barn. Red goes back and finds Snow stealing their eggs. Red tells her that it's okay and Snow admits she hid in the barn to stay warm and because she heard the wolf howling. Snow gives a fake name and admits that someone is hunting her down. Red understands and Snow asks her to call her Mary. They go to the well and Red explains that it's Wolfstime and that the creature kills cattle. As they pull up the bucket, they realize that it's filled with blood. Snow turns and discovers that the wolf has killed the hunting party and left them in the field.

-----

Mary Margaret comes to see Emma and asks how David is. Emma admits that they haven't found anything about Kathryn and comments that they do know that she gave Mary Margaret a well-deserved slap. When Mary Margaret wonders if she means that, Emma warns that she's just preparing her for what other people will think. She warns that some people will think that David killed Kathryn and asks if Mary Margaret knows where David might have been that night. However, Mary Margaret admits that she wasn't with David that night. As they pass the bus stop, they see Dr. Whale hitting on Ruby. She sends him on his way and explains that she's planning on leaving town. When Ruby admits that she doesn't have a plan, Mary Margaret offers to put her up with them and Emma reluctantly agrees.

-----

The townspeople gather at the inn and Mayor Tomkins addresses the people, admitting that if he had stayed with the party then he would have been dead as well. Granny comes in and tells them that they have no choice but to hide and cower. When Tomkins questions her, Granny says that says that when she was a child, her father and brothers decided to take on another wolf to protect them. She watched as the beast killed them all, grabbing their weapons and ripping out their throats. It then attacked her, grabbing her arm and biting, and then turning and walking away. Granny warns that if the current wolf is like that one, there is nothing they can do.

Afterward at her cottage, Red admits that she feels trapped. Snow realizes that Red is involved with Peter and that it isn't subtle. Red explains that things between her and her friend Peter are changing and asks if Snow has someone. When Snow admits that she doesn't, Red said that she and Peter want to run away, but Granny won't let her out. Snow agrees that the wolf is dangerous but suggest that Granny is keeping Red from love and using the wolf as an excuse. Red decides that they should kill the wolf, suggesting that they hunt it during the day while it's sleeping. Snow hesitates but Red insists that she's going whether her new friend accompanies her or not.

-----

Mary Margaret parks at the city limits where Kathryn disappeared and goes into the woods. She hears something moving in the woods David emerges from the brush. He says that he's looking for Kathryn as well, and Mary Margaret assures him that Emma knows that he didn't do anything. She promises to defend David and then realizes that he appears to be in shock. He turns and walks away without a word as Mary Margaret calls after him.

-----

Red and Snow go into the woods and finally find the wolf's enormous paw prints in the snow. They follow them toward the trail and Red assures Snow that she's good at tracking things down that she wants.

-----

At the sheriff's office, Henry helps Ruby look for a job but discovers that she's not very good at most things. When the non-emergency line keeps ringing, an irritated Ruby finally starts taking the calls. Emma comes in and points out that Ruby is good on the phone, and offers to pay her to work as a receptionist. Ruby leaps at the opportunity, insisting that she wants to be useful, and Emma asks her to get lunch. Mary Margaret comes in and tells Emma that David is in the woods and he's acting as if he's a different person.

-----

The two women follow the tracks and realize that the paw prints are slowly changing into boot prints. As they continue, Snow explains that she once heard a story of a creature that transforms on the full moon. They discover that the trail leads back to Red's cottage and up to the window. Red admits that Peter was at the window the previous night and realizes that either he will kill the hunting party or they will kill him. Snow tells Red to tell Peter the truth and save everyone, but Red realizes that Granny will come out to find her. When she hesitates, Snow tells her that she has to do something.

-----

Ruby goes to the diner to get lunch, braces herself, and walks in to place an order with Granny. She talks about her new job but Granny, unimpressed, says that she's doing the same thing as always and places the order. She finally reluctantly tells Ruby that she hopes she's found what she's looking for and walks away.

-----

Red tells Peter what they've discovered and he finally realizes that he's the killer. She says that they can leave together because all they have to do is tie him up during the full moon, and Peter gives her chains to secure him. He warns Ruby that she has to get away from him once he's bound, but she says that she will stay with him and do anything for him.

-----

At the sheriff's office, Henry locks away his recovered storybook as Emma goes to find David. He explains that Ruby is Red Riding Hood and doesn't remember what she's capable of. Ruby comes back with lunch, depressed that she's doing so little, and Emma tells her to come along with her and help search for David. When Ruby hesitates, Emma assures her that she can do it. In the woods, Ruby worries that she'll screw everything up, but then hears something. Emma doesn't hear anything but Ruby runs off and finds David lying on the ground, unconscious. He finally wakes up but has no memory of where he is or how he got there. The last thing he remembers was being in Emma's office the previous night.

Emma takes David to the hospital and Dr. Whale says that whatever caused his patient's blackout is the same thing that caused his coma in the first place. He suggests that people in similar states can still function, and Emma wonders if David could have made the call or killed Kathryn in such a state. Regina comes in and objects to Emma questioning David, and tells David to get a lawyer. Dr. Whale admits that Regina is still David's medical contact in the absence of Kathryn and the mayor tells Emma to go back to searching for the missing woman.

Emma calls Ruby at the station and tells her to go to the toll bridge where David was found the last time, and see if there are any clues there now. Ruby hesitates and Emma insists to be now. The woman reluctantly takes Emma's car to the toll bridge and finds a wooden board lying on the shore. She shoves it aside and starts digging with a stick, and discovers an antique wooden box. Ruby braces herself and briefly opens the box, and then screams in horror and closes it.

-----

Snow is pretending to be asleep, wearing Ruby's clothing. Granny comes in and quickly sees through the deception, and Snow finally tells her that Peter is the wolf. She tells Granny that Peter is tied up and Granny runs off, saying that he's in danger.

Peter is chained up and stares in horror as Red transforms into a wolf and advances on him.

-----

Back at the station, Emma and Ruby examine the box and then hastily close it as they realize it's exactly what it appears to be. Emma assures Ruby that now they can figure out what happened, and tells the woman that she did good. She assures Ruby that however she does what she does, she's impressed. Ruby admits that she's scared out of her mind but Emma points out that she did it anyway.

-----

Granny and Snow make their way through the woods and Granny explains that Red inherited the curse from her mother, and that the cloak is supposed to keep the curse at bay. When she was attacked years ago, the wolf was Red's grandfather and he marked Granny for later, when he came back and turned her as well. Granny has a silver-tipped crossbow bolt ready and explains that it will drop a wolf, and smells Red ahead. They advanced carefully from downwind and find the wolf. It hears Snow and lunges at them, and Granny puts the cloak on her. As Red transforms back, Snow realizes that Peter is dead. They hear the hunters approaching and tell Red that they have to go, but she asks where Peter is and Snow explains that he wasn't the wolf. Granny apologizes for keeping Red's secret from her and tells her that she has to go. Red realizes what she is and bursts into tears, and Snow takes her away while Granny turns to confront the hunters.

-----

Ruby returns to the diner the next morning and talks to Granny, who complains about how the scars on her arm are bothering her the same as every full moon. When Granny wonders what she wants, Ruby says that she wants her job back and admits that she didn't know how to be like Granny. She balked at the extra responsibility and got scared, and Granny tells her not to be scared. Ruby says that she is but that she'll do it anyway because she found something in herself that she didn't expect. Thanks to Emma, she found out that she wants to do something that makes her happy, somewhere that she loves. Granny explains that she wanted Ruby to learn the business so that she could take over the place when she retires. Ruby hugs her and Granny mutters that she's proud of her.

Mary Margaret visits David at the animal shelter and says that everything will be okay, but he admits that the only explanation isn't a good one. Emma comes in and tells them that they found a box containing a human heart. As Mary Margaret goes to David, Emma says that the fingerprints on the box matched someone in town. When David tells Emma to arrest him, she says that the fingerprints belong to Mary Margaret.
