Hook takes the women to the beanstalk and Emma wonder why they can't simply find a bean and create a portal. The rogue captain explains that the giants were the ones who grew the beans but used them to plunder the lands. The humans rose up against them and Jack the Giant-Killer finally dispatched all of them except one. The final surviving giant destroyed the beans to prevent the humans from getting them and has the compass among the many treasures that he has gathered. Hook reminds them that Cora needs the compass to find Storybrooke, so once they have the compass they can steal the ashes and go back. When they wonder why Hook is helping them, he explains that he'll help whoever he can who will let get to Storybrooke and take his revenge. However, Hook warns them that the beanstalk is protected by a spell to repel the intruders. He has two counter spells, placed on bracers, and wonders which woman will accompany him.

However, he assures her that everything is fine and tells Emma that his name is Neal Cassady. He invites her out for drinks and Emma, distracted, drives past a stop sign. A policeman pulls her over but Neal speaks up, saying that he owns the car and was giving his girlfriend Emma driving instructions. The cop lets her off with a warning and leaves, and Emma realizes that Neal stole the car before she stole it. Neal invites her to have a drink again and Emma drives off.

Emma insists that she should go because she's a thief. She talks to Mulan privately and asks if she has anything that will help her. Mulan gives her a bag of poppy seeds that will put the giant to sleep when he breathes them. Emma asks how sharp her sword is and confirms that Mulan can cut through it. She tells the warrior woman to cut down the beanstalk in ten hours and take Mary Margaret away. Mulan warns that Mary Margaret won't like it but Emma says that it's necessary. She then goes back to Hook, who puts the bracer on her and then asks for his hook. They give it to him so he can make the climb and they begin their ascent. As they climb, Hook flirts with Emma but she remains silent. He tells her that it's pointless because she's an open book, and he accurately determines that she needs to get back to Henry so that he won't feel abandoned the way that she was. Hook explains that he's seen the same look in other abandoned children from his time in Neverland. When he wonders if she's ever been in love, Emma denies it.

As he talks to the man, Neal takes a keychain with a compass on it from the rack. A customer comes in and sees Neal shoplifting some food, and tries to warn the cashier. Emma fakes going into labor to distract the man long enough so that she and Neal can escape. They drive to a motel and move into a room after the family leaves, putting a do not disturb sign up so housekeeping won't come in. as they look around, Emma notices that the family left a Native American dreamcatcher behind. Neal says that he wants to settle down and get a real home for the two of them together. Emma wonders where he has in mind and Neal invites her to pick somewhere on a map at random. She points to Tallahassee, FL, and wonders if Neal really wants a home. He says that what he wants is her and the couple kisses.

Mulan creates a crude sun clock so she can tell when ten hours have passed. Meanwhile, Aurora offers to help Mary Margaret on the first watch. When Mary Margaret points out that Aurora hasn't gotten any rest, the princess explains that since Phillip woke her up from the sleeping curse, she hasn't been able to sleep because she has nightmares. Mary Margaret says that she was under the same curse and had the same nightmares afterward, and that David would help her by lighting a candle and watching out for her. She offers to watch over Aurora and the princess settles down for some sleep.

Hook and Emma climb to the top and find themselves in the ruins of a castle. Hook tells Emma that humans and giants fought their final battle there. He notices that Emma has cut her hand and warps it, warning her that giants can spell blood. When Hook suggests that they wait for the giant to fall asleep, Emma says that they don't have that much time and tells the captain about the poppy seeds. As they work out a plan, Emma notices that Hook has a tattoo on his arm with the name Milah, and asks who it is. Hook says that it's a name from a long time ago and Emma realizes that Milah is the woman that Rumplestiltskin took away from him. The rogue congratulates her on her perceptions given she's never been in love, and Emma concedes that she might once have been in love.

As they prepare to leave town, Neal shows Emma post of himself that he found in the post office. He explains that in Phoenix he was a janitor working at a jewelry store and stole some watches. The owner was too drunk to notice but they were able to identify Neal from the surveillance cameras. Neal hid the watches at a train station locker but couldn't go back for them. Now he tells Emma that he has to go to Canada and can't take her with him. Emma suggests that she get the watches and they fence them for enough money to buy IDs and get over the border. Neal considers the idea and agrees.

Emma hides atop a statue halfway up the door to the cave while Hook makes noise to lure the giant out. When he comes out, Emma and Hook realize that the giant is much taller than the statue. Hook runs out, luring the giant to kneel down, and Emma hits him with the poppy seeds. The giant passes out and Hook congratulates Emma, saying that they make a good team.

As Aurora sleeps, she has a nightmare. Mary Margaret shakes her away and gets her to talk about what she experienced so that she can cope with it. Aurora describes a nightmare of a red room with no doors or windows, with curtains on fire and someone looking at her from the shadows. Mary Margaret tells her that the nightmare will fade and sits down with Aurora to keep watch over her.

Hook and Emma find the giant's treasure chamber and Emma has to drag him away from the other treasures and help her find the compass. She warns him that they have no idea how long the sleeping potion lasts and Hook goes to help her.

-----

Emma enters the train station and goes to Neal's locker. Once she has the watches, she strolls out past the unsuspecting guards.

-----

As Hook and Emma search for the compass, they find a human skeleton holding a large sword. The sword has "Jack" etched on the blade and they realize it belonged to the legendary Giant Killer. As Hook steps away, Emma stops him and points out a trip wire that he almost set off, leading to a cage above. Hook continues flirting with her but Emma tells him to stick to business.

-----

Once Emma meets Neal, he confirms that all of the watches are there and tell her that they can get $20,000 for them. He takes all but one, giving that one to Emma as a gift, and they agree to meet later at a specific address. However, as Neal goes to the fence, a man chases after him. The thief runs but his pursuer soon captures him. However, the man says that he's not a cop and that he's there to help Neal protect Emma. He introduces himself as August Booth and explains that he was Emma's guardian angel up to two years ago. August admits that he got distracted giving into temptation and that he lost track of Emma. When Neal points out that August isn't a very good guardian angel, August reminds him that Emma is now robbing convenience stores. August realizes that Neal loves Emma and tells him that he has to leave her so that Emma can find her destiny. If Neal stays with her then she will never find it. Neal is unconvinced and August takes the thief to his motorcycle. He opens a wooden case and tells Neal that what he sees inside will convince him that magic does exist and that everything he's saying is true. Once Neal sees the contents, he agrees to listen and August explains that Emma is the key to breaking a curse. He asks if Neal will do the right thing once he explains exactly what the curse is and Neal says that he's ready.

Emma waits for Neal but he doesn't show up or answer his phone. A policeman arrives and puts her under arrest, explaining that Neal tipped them off to check the surveillance footage of the train station and confirm she took the watches. The officer takes the watch and asks where the other watches are, and Emma says that they're gone and they're not coming back.

-----

Hook and Emma continue searching. When they need to climb to search, Emma insists on Hook going first and he suggests that he trust her. The giant wakes up and comes running in, setting off a ceiling collapse that separate Emma from Hook. Emma tries to back away but the giant grabs her.

-----

Two months later, Neal meets August in Vancouver and says that he wants to talk to Emma so he can confirm that she's okay and he can move on. August tells him that Emma got eleven months in the prison at Phoenix and Neil insists that it should have been him. However, August tells him that despite that, Emma will get out and do what she's supposed to do. Neal makes August promise that he will watch out for Emma from now on and then gives him the $20,000 as well as the compass keychain with the keys to the yellow Volkswagen on them. The thief explains that he was able to get a valid VIN for the car and it belongs to Emma. Before he walks away, Neal makes August promise to tell him once the curse is broken and he can be reunited with Emma. August agrees, telling him that he'll send him a postcard.

-----

The giant holds Emma and prepares to crush her, and she begs him to spare her so that she can be with a family. He tells her that the humans killed his family and prepares to kill her, and Emma bites his hand. Once he drops her, Emma runs to grab the Giant Killer sword and then cuts the tripwire. The cage drops on the giant, trapping him, and Emma threatens to kill him with the sword unless he gives her the compass. He refuses, saying that he doesn't trust her to spare him, and complains that it was humans that wiped out his kind to get the beans. The legends were written by the victors and the giants took the blame. Emma persists and the giant finally tosses out the compass, saying that he's not the bad guy. Emma realizes that he might be telling the truth about the humans but says that it doesn't matter. She notices that he's wearing a bean on a necklace and asks if it works. The giant tells her that it's useless and he wears it to remember that humans are killer. Emma tells him that they aren't all humans and walks away. The giant frees himself but then removes masonry revealing another entrance out. He tells Emma that he owes her a favor for sparing his life and tells her to go before he changes his mind. However, she gets an idea and tells him that he owes her two favors, for sparing her at the cave entrance and again in the cage.

Once she explains what she wants, Emma frees Hook from the rubble and shows him the compass. However, she then manacles Hook to the wall and admits that she can't trust him with the compass, even though she think she might be telling the truth. Emma assures him that the giant will release him unharmed in a few hours once she has a head start and walks away.

When the ten hours are up, Mulan swings at the beanstalk. Mary Margaret tackles her and they fight, Mulan insisting that Emma made her promise. As they fight, Emma comes down and shows them that she completed her mission. She explains that they have ten hours before Hook comes down and prepares to leave. However, her mother tells her that they are going back together no matter what.
