One by One

Show Summary

One By One was the BBC TV series based on the Zoovet series of autobiographical books by the internationally renowned zoo vet David Taylor. Over three series it showed ten years of 'Donald Turner's' life as he struggled to make it as a wildlife vet, and his metamorphosis into the leading figure of wild animal surgery and healthcare.

  • The life and times of Britain's first full-time vet to deal solely with exotic animals.

What can I say? One By One was a direct descendant of All Creatures Great And Small.

Having identified a ratings winner the BBC were keen to capture the audience from Sunday evenings, and thought they would do the same scenario, but slightly more up to date and with exotic animals instead of farm animals.

However, the series failed to clock up the same amount of series as did All Creatures Great And Small.

Why? Mostly because the programme was placed on Tuesday evenings whereas All Creatures Great And Small was placed in prime Sunday evening (i.e. FAMILY) slots, and partly through a lack of advertising.

Overall One By One is a forgotten gem that deserves to shine. Afterall it was one of the forefathers of contemporary family viewing, like Heartbeat and Where The Heart Is.

    One of my true favourites.
