  • Oh Nathan!

As season two draws closer to its end, I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning increases the tension in many storylines.

Oh Nathan! Just when you think he's getting better he drives himself into a wall. The scene where he sped off was intense and the flashes to him and Haley worked well. It really is horrible how this has turned out for him. I liked Cooper and it's a shame he's going to get all the stick for the crash. The racing side of things wasn't that interesting in my opinion.

Andy getting fired cos of Dan was quite amusing. That scene at least. When he outs him and Karen and then goes 'discuss' - classic. Clever how Andy asked him how his karma was after Nathan's crash. Mouth and Erica was pretty random...but not too bad. I liked the dancing scene with all the girls. It was fun and mellow in an otherwise dramatic episode.

Peyton and Whitey's heart to heart about Jake was sweet. I'm sad they have to be over. What is interesting is Brooke piecing together that shredded paper for Lucas. I do like that they're hinting at a reunion for these two and that will certainly further it along. Oh, and Deb's leaving Dan for good now and is apparently been a drug addict since season one...okay.

Only a few episodes left and now all the silly new characters are gone things should improve!!

  • The Scott Boys Go Racing!!

I'm not a NASCAR fan. In fact I hate it. I'm from Indiana. I love IndyCar and the Indy 500, but because it involves racing, I do love this episode. I love seeing Lucas and Nathan in the pacecar and behind the wheel of the racecar.

The race was really fun and I love that Nathan almost beat Cooper and while it sucks that he crashed and it scares me every time I get why Nathan took those extra laps at those high speeds. I've been in a car around Indianapolis Motor Speedway going 90 mph and it felt great. I can't imagine how amazing 200 mph would feel.

Lucas pulling Nathan out of the car and telling him to 'hang on' was so touching and sweet and sad.

I feel so bad for Peyton during this episode. She would probably feel better if she got to go see Jake, but he doesn't want her to because it would be so hard for him. As weird as it is I loved when Whitey came to Peyton's and told her Jenny was okay and that she was in Florida.

Dan was as always awful. It was really low of him to go into Andy's class and say all that stuff. And he really doesn't have a reason to. Except to destroy the lives of everyone around him, which is probably his goal in life. I felt so bad for Andy that he had to quit his job, but I love him and Karen together.

The girls at Tric were so funny. Deb boiling water to throw on Dan was great. I loved it. And then it finally comes out about Deb's addiction when she tries to donate blood for Nathan and it is unusable.moreless

  • Season 2, Episode 19.

The dance scene was a little out there... Good song, though. Mouth was such a gentleman to Erica. I like how they're befriending Erica. Good episode.moreless
  • Loveee!!

Nathan's Uncle Cooper (Deb's younger brother) comes into town to take Nathan and Lucas on a racing trip. On the track, Nathan and Lucas are challenged to a race by the beautiful Daytona and her smart aleck brother Jarret, but things go horribly wrong when Nathan loses control of his car and crashes into a wall. Meanwhile, Deb's addiction to pain pills intensifies and Dan exposes Andy's relationship with Karen to his class. This episode is named after an album and the lyrics from a song by Bright Eyes. Start you engines. Nathan's Uncle Cooper takes Nathan and Lucas out of town for somoe lessons in professional racecar driving. But the fun turns tragic when Nathan crashes..Maybe on purpose. What can I say about this episode? Another great episode. I love One Tree Hill, the writers have done so well, on making it an awesome show. I really really enjoyed this episode, it was so nerve wrackig when Nathan was speeding around.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (7)

    • When Nathan is looking for a little of that 200 MPH therapy and the images of Haley are flashing through his mind, it seems odd that he has a memory of Haley getting on the bus with Chris. He wasn't there when she left.

    • When Peyton rips pages out of her address book Anna's address is reveald as 615 Lamplighter Way, Tree Nill, NC. Since Brooke lives next door, that means that her address must be 613 or 617 Lamplighter Way.

    • After the girls are seen dancing at TRIC, we come to a shot of a car driving on a racetrack. A close-up reveals that the car is driven by Daytona, with Cooper and the Scott brothers riding passenger. As Daytona is talking about homeschooling, watch closely. When the camera is in front of the car, it can be clearly seen that they are actually in front of a green screen displaying a racetrack and not actually driving on a track. The clip can be seen here.

    • When Deb walks into Tric, Karen calls her "Boozy." In the past, Dan has used this nickname for Deb and Keith.

    • Jarret's T-shirt says "That ain't frosting." In one of Peyton's Podcasts, she mentions an inside joke between her and Mark, the record store guy (played by show creator and executive producer Mark Schwann) that included the same line.

    • Daytona, the name of Nathan's childhood friend that races cars, is also the name of a racetrack, Daytona International Speedway, where a NASCAR race is held, the Daytona 500.

    • When Peyton is ripping pages out of her address book, we see the following addresses...

      Anna Taggaro
615 Lamplighter Way, Tree Nill, NC.

      Haley James
212 Chestnut Street, Tree Hill, NC.

      Keith Scott Auto Body
712 Covil Ave, Tree Hill, NC.

      Jake Jagielski
340 Keaton Ave, Tree Hill, NC

  • QUOTES (18)

    • Daytona: He would have turned left. Nathan's an athlete. His reflexes would have been to turn left. But he didn't. It was almost like... like he aimed for the wall, you know? Like he tried to crash.

    • Whitey: Have you ever been to Florida, Peyton?
      Peyton: Once, with my dad.
Whitey: There's a little town, just off the Gulf of Mexico. The weather's perfect year round, kind of like today. It's almost a paradise. It's a great place to raise a child. Or, if you're family, to protect one 'til her daddy can arrive. Jenny's fine, Peyton. Jake wanted you to know that.
Peyton: I went by to see him this morning, and he told me he didn't want me to visit anymore. He said it was too hard.
Whitey: I can understand that. I know you miss your mom, honey, just like I miss my wife. But think about Jake. He misses both women that he loves.

    • Nathan: (In the emergency room) Promise me..
      Lucas: Anything.
      Nathan: Don't call Haley.

    • Cooper: Nathan, you reduce your speed and you come in.
Nathan: You know what I need, Coop? Some of that 200 mile an hour therapy you were talking about.
      Cooper: Nathan?
Nathan: Nobody goes past seven on the tach, right? Let's see about eight.
      Cooper: No, too fast. Nathan!
Nathan: You were right, Coop. This feels pretty damn good. (Nathan has flashbacks of his relationship with Haley right before crashing his car into the wall.)

    • Brooke: (Answering her cell.) Hello?
Peyton: Hi. Is this the Safe Rides program?
      Brooke: It sure is.
Peyton: Well, I was wondering if you could come pick me up.
      Brooke: Of course.
Peyton: Good. I'd love to feel safe for a night. Thanks.

    • Karen: How you doing... boozy?
Deb: Great, actually. As a matter of fact I'm turning over a new leaf. From now on, I'm lookin on the bright side of things, staying positive.
Karen: Oh, Dan paid Jules to seduce Keith.
Deb: Life sucks, I need a drink.

    • Cooper: (referring to Haley) What's wrong with her? What'd you marry, a blind girl? (Nathan sighs) Aw man... It's your gear isn't it? Okay, drop your shorts. Let's have a look.
      Nathan: Cooper...
Cooper: Come on, let's see it.

    • Andy: Well, the Dean presented me with two options. Either I end the relationship or I lose my job.
      Karen: There's gotta be someone...
      Andy: So I quit.
      Karen: Andy, you love teaching.
Andy: Not as much as I love you.
      Karen: I'm so sorry.
Andy: It was a no-brainer, Karen. There'll be other teaching positions, but I hope there's never another woman in my life.

    • Lucas: Hey, Brooke. You decent?
Brooke: Dressed, yes. Decent, never have been.

    • Nathan: Cooper, what are you doing here, man?
Cooper: Perspective, nephew. I'm here to adjust yours.

    • Dan walks into his office to find Andy sitting in his chair.
Dan: Think you're on the wrong side of the desk, little man.
Andy: I think you're on the wrong side of me. I lost my teaching position tonight.
Dan: Really? That's terrible. What happened?
Andy: Do you have any faith, Dan?
      Dan: Faith?
Andy: You know, do you believe in anything? God? Science? Karma?
Dan: No. No, I don't believe in karma. But I do believe I'll give you a chance to remove yourself from my establishment, before I personally remove you.
Andy: You know, we're very different, you and I. See, I'm a big believer in karma. I think it's amazing how most of the time tragedy befalls a man who just isn't living right.
Dan: You know, if you're gonna threaten me kid... at least do it like a man.
Andy: Karma finds us all in time, Dan. But, you know? I find that sometimes it helps to just point it in the right direction.

    • Cooper: You know, when my wife left, I was a mess.
Nathan: You saying you're not still a mess? I mean, you should've been. Carrie was really hot.
Cooper: Yeah, well, they usually are when they're supermodels. And by the way, shut up. I had to let it all go, you know... The feeling that I wasn't good enough for Carrie, how much I resented the fact that she wanted things besides me. I mean, it wasn't fair to her. Hell, I wasn't going to give up racing for her.
Nathan: I would've. I mean given up basketball for Haley. I kinda did.
Cooper: Well you think, maybe that's the reason she left? I mean, when you met her, would you have given it up then?
      Nathan: No, probably not.
Cooper: Maybe you're not the person she fell in love with anymore, man. Maybe she's not the person you thought she was. Look, I don't say this to hurt you, Nate, but... it's just people change, you know?
Nathan: So, after she left you... I mean, was there a day when it felt better?
Cooper: Sure, followed by a day when it felt worse. I mean, that's just the way it goes. But I got to tell you, you'd be amazed at how therapeutic 200 miles an hour can be.
      Nathan: I'll bet, man.
Cooper: Look Nate... love is a pretty great thing man. Maybe it's the greatest thing. But it's got to be true love, for the both of you.
Nathan: What if it was? What if it still is?
Cooper: If it still is, man, you fight like hell for it. But the harder question is "what if it wasn't?" Trust me, that one's a bitch.

    • Karen: I miss Keith!
      Deb: I miss Nathan!
      Peyton: I miss Jake!
Brooke: I don't really miss Felix at all! Or my parents... but I do miss my money!

    • Deb: You know what I always do when I need to feel better?
      Brooke: Drink?
      Deb: No, dance.

    • Lucas: Stephen King once wrote "Time takes it all whether you want it to or not. Time takes it all. Time bears it away. And in the end there is only darkness, and sometime we lose them there again."

    • Lucas: Joseph Conrad once wrote "Who knows what true happiness is... not the conventional word but the naked terror. To the lonely themselves it wears a mask. The most miserable outcast hugs some memory or some illusion."

    • Deb: I know about what you did to Keith.
Dan: I see. (Spots the pot of water Deb is boiling) What's all this?
Deb: I'm boiling water to throw on you?
Dan: And what's the syrup for?
Deb: That's so it sticks to you. I wish you would have died on that floor in the beach house. I went to the chapel, and I prayed for you to die. That's the kind of horrible, pathetic shell of a person I've become. But no more. I'm walking out that door Dan, because if I don't, one of us is going to die soon.

    • (After learning Deb has been abusing prescription pills)
Dan: How long with the pills?
Deb: Since I quit my job.
      Dan: Why?
Deb: Because I'm married to you.

    • Episode Title: I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning is an album by Bright Eyes. The phrase is also included in the song Road To Joy, in that same album: "The sun came up with no conclusion/Flowers sleeping in their beds/This city's cemetery's humming/I'm wide-awake, it's morning".
