  • Luke's first game is sucked. who knew it would be like that? but the core character never gives up...

what can I say? they couldn't do better. Luke gets the place in the team but in the first game he just sucks. so this episode shows us how he almost gives up and quits the team but then smth helps him to believe again in himself and in the end of the episode he returns...

now about smth (or actually someone) that helped Luke. about Peyton. she's really deep girl but not confident enough in herself, in her art, in her perception of the life. and here's Luke's turn to help Peyton what he does by giving her drawings to the "THUD" magazine.

Nathan is still a jerk. and Haley still has scenes only with Luke but these scenes are awesome. guess, everyone would love to have friendship like theirs.

and here comes the newbie... Brooke. the captain of cheerleaders, Peyton's best friend, the girl who gets in this epi some kind of crush on Lucas. she seems not to be the smart thing but probably it's just 'coz she had like 3 minutes of screen-time.

and adults... nothing new except the fact that we find out Dan and Karen had quite serious relationships in high school but then he chose the game instead of her and went to college. that's the story.

FAVE SCENE: Luke and Peyton talk in his car and then she invites him to come in but... well, Peyton was such a geezer in S1!

FAVE QUOTE: Lucas (to Peyton): Your art matters. It's what got me here!moreless
  • i love it

    Website is great
  • Another good episode to open the series.

Again, a good episode. Just by re-watching these first two episodes I can see that One Tree Hill was much strong in its earlier seasons.

You had loads of good stuff here; Lucas being a bad player and trying to get better, Nathan dealing with Dan's pushiness, Peyton and Lucas getting to know each other. Good drama without being too in your face.

Peyton was a little too whiny about her art here, and I didn't really like the 'your art matters' line from Lucas but it was heartfelt and a good set-up for their future relationship. And why the hell is she with Nathan? He's an ass to her.

The drama between Karen and Lucas was believable and once again showed how strong their relationship is. I really love Haley in these episodes. She's not featured that often but she's funny, quirky and a great friend to Lucas. She'll be linked with Nathan soon enough.

Brooke being kind of slutty was funny. Her scene with Peyton about the future and how she didn't want to get fat was classic. Nice to see Jake reach out to Luke as well. The team aren't all jackasses, thank god.

Great ending too - Lucas cuts out 'Scott' from his name. I like early One Tree Hill right now.

  • Your art matters.....

Before One Tree Hill I never really spent time thinking about which characters should be together, but with this show I thought from the beginning that Lucas and Peyton belonged together. I did enjoy Lucas and Brooke's relationship in season 3 and I liked Peyton and Jake together, but I still wanted Lucas and Peyton to be together in the end. And this episode (along with the first meeting in the pilot) shows the beginning of their attraction towards each other. From "Nice hands. Nice legs" to "Your art matters. It's what got me here." I also love when he Thud-ed Peyton by giving her drawings to the guy at the magazine.

It sucks that Lucas played so bad in his first game, but he gets it back in the next one. In this episode we see the first of many fights between Lucas and Nathan. And we also see the beginning of the end of Nathan and Peyton. One of the best parts of the episode is when Lucas turn around and Dan see's that "Scott" is no longer on his jersey and looks a bit hurt by it. That's a look and moment that only Paul can pull off. You hate him but in that second you almost feel bad for him because he is hurt by the fact that Lucas wants to disassociate himself from him.moreless
  • Luca's first game as a Raven.

This episode opens with Lucas on the riverside with his boys, who all are going to watch him in his first game. We see Karen, Keith & Haley in the cafe leaving for the game, but Karen stays at work instead. Whitey takes Lucas into his office and gives him his very own jersey. This is the first episode which we see Brooke Davis. The game doesn't go so well as hoped, Lucas seems to be missing more baskets than every before, so Whitey pulls him off. This is the first episode of the show to have the opening credits, ft music by Gavin DeGraw. After the game, Peyton & Nathan have another argument. So she walks home and goes to the river court where she bumps into Lucas, who gives her a ride home. Later Nathan phones to apologise to Peyton. Lucas gets into a fight in class with Nathan. Lucas sees Peyton throwing her drawings in to the bin and he gets them out. When he sees her next he tells her that their good, but she isn't impressed that he looked at them. Lucas didn't go to practice, so Whitey goes to find him, and finds him at the river court. He tells Lucas that they have a game tomorrow night and that he is on the team for the game. Karen tells Lucas that she wants to go and see the game, but he still isn't going to play. After they have a talk, he comes round to the idea of playing in the game. On his way to the game Lucas goes to Thud and hands them Peyton's drawings. As Karen walks into the gym, she spots Dan. As the team comes out Lucas tells Peyton that her art matters. We also see that Lucas has removed his name "Scott" from the back of his jersey. When Dan sees the back of Lucas jersey, he looks upsetmoreless

  • QUOTES (44)

    • Haley (to Keith about why Karen doesn't want to go to the game): She doesn't want to go. She doesn't want her high school sweetheart, slash your brother Dan, slash the jerk who abandoned Lucas, slash the father of Nathan, the team's star player... Slash my wrists if I have to hear the story again. Let's go!

    • Peyton: I guess misery really does love company.
Lucas: What are you doing here?
Peyton: Actually, I'm not here. I was never here.
Lucas: You know, I shoot the ball and it goes in. I don't ask questions, I don't think about it. It's just the way it is.
Peyton: Or the way it was.
      Lucas: Yeah.
Peyton: Look, it's just a game. Who cares if the entire school, most of your friends and half the town saw you suck.
Lucas: So…you've clearly come to cheer me up.

    • Peyton: Why'd you decide to do it? Join the team? 'Cause you don't exactly fit in here, do you?
Lucas: The game, I guess. I love the game.
Peyton: Right. The same reason I cheer. It's all a big game. Why not just stay on the playground? Why join the varsity?
Lucas: Because I want to know if I'm good.
Peyton: Well, if you ask my opinion, we all just wasted a perfectly good evening. You, me, and everybody else in there.
Lucas: Then why do you do it? I mean, do you really like it or not?
Peyton: If I say that I like it, then I'm just another cheerleader. But if I say that I hate it, then I'm either a liar or a fraud. Either way I lose.

    • Haley: Any side effects?
      Lucas: From what?
      Haley: Your amnesia.
Lucas: What are you talking about?
Haley: I'm talking about how you must've gotten amnesia because I know you would've mentioned that you got into a fight today. Are you okay, Luke?
Lucas: Yeah. You ever wake up from a really good dream and try to get back to sleep? Or you got the flu and you promise yourself that you'd appreciate normal so much more if you could just get back to it?
      Haley: Yeah.
Lucas: That's the way I feel. I just want things to go back to the way they were.
      Haley: With basketball?
      Lucas: With everything.

    • Peyton: Those are my sketches!
      Lucas: Um, I wasn't looking.
Peyton: This is personal, alright? I don't read your diary!
      Lucas: I don't have a diary.
Peyton: No? "Dear Diary, my daddy doesn't love me". P.S. Stay out of my stuff!

    • Nathan: Dad, he was hitting on my girlfriend! What do you want me to do?
Dan: Your girlfriend? Nathan, if you're gonna get in a fight, get in a fight over something important. Did you get hurt?
      Nathan: No.
      Dan: Okay, good.
      Nathan: Did you?
      Dan: Me? Why?
Nathan: He wasn't swinging at me, dad' he was swinging at you.

    • Jake: (to Lucas) Don't let him take it. Your talent. It's all yours.

    • Nathan: I'm thinking about quitting the team.
      Peyton: Right.
Nathan: No, I'm serious. I don't even like it anymore. Whitey can't stand me. It's never good enough for my dad.
Peyton: I think you should. Why not, right? I mean, you can quit the team and I'll quit cheerleading and then we can just walk away from it. Nathan, let's do it!
Nathan: (smiling) Yeah, right. That's what I'm gonna do. I gotta go. I'll see you at the game.

    • Nathan: You've got some ugly toes, girl.
      Peyton: No I don't.
Nathan: Yeah, you do. They're like practically fingers.
Peyton: Well, then just focus on the middle one.

    • Whitey: People who value their lives usually knock first. (looks up and sees Dan) Oh, that explains it.

    • Jake: You know, Nathan, he's a hell of player, he really is. But he buys into all of this nonsense. You've got him scared. Fear changes everything.

    • Karen: (to Lucas) I'm sorry. I should've told you the truth about why I couldn't be there. I really wanted to, Luke, but the idea of walking into that gym… That's where he told me he was going away to college without me. That's where everything changed. I don't regret one second of one day with you, okay? I don't. But that day was a hard day in that gym. And it was basketball that he chose. And I'm sorry that you have to hear things like that, but I don't want to lie to you either.

    • Keith: (to Lucas about Peyton's car) It's a rule of life. The prettier the girl, the messier the car. It's a real turnoff, huh?

    • Keith: Look, it's only one game, Luke. Even Jordan played lousy in his first pro game.
Lucas: Michael Jordan scored 16 points in his first pro game.
Keith: Yeah. I know that. I just didn't think you did.

    • Brooke: You know, Peyton, I know you're all Gwen Stefani, plaid skirt, "I'm a badass", but we love you anyway, and you know why? Because Friday night, when it is game time, there you are. One of us.
Peyton: P.S. Gwen Stefani is not a badass.

    • Brooke: You know, it's really too bad Lucas is poor and he can't play because he is fine. Hey, I think it's really good you're fighting with Nathan again.
      Peyton: You do?
Brooke: Yeah. Every time you, guys, fight I get to hear new music.

    • Whitey: What are you, putting on makeup? Get out in the gym and start warming up. Jagielski, when you find the pumps to match your skirt, you might meet us in the gym.

    • Nathan: What do you know about it, Jagielski?
Jake: What do any of us know about anything?

    • Peyton: (to Nathan on the other side of the phone) Peyton's not here right now. Just her lame music.

    • Karen: (talking about her past with Dan) I thought I was over it, Keith, I really did. Maybe I've just been hiding. Just, I can't go back there. The place knows too much.

    • Nathan: (to Lucas during his first not-so-good game) Hey, which side you on?

    • Whitey: Luke, relax. Destiny has a way of finding you.

    • Lucas: Oh, come on, guys, you don't gotta come. It's just a game.
Skills: Right. Whitey asked you to play on the team.
      Junk: And Nathan threatens you.
Mouth: You beat him right here one on one, you join the team.
Skills: And now it's the first game and we aren't gotta come? Um-um. We're going. This game is for all of us.

    • Mr. Kelly: Peyton, describe Lucas using just one word.
      Peyton: Choke.
      (Class snickers)
Mr. Kelly: Okay, quiet please. Thank you. Lucas, care to respond and describe Peyton?
      Lucas: Lonely.
Mr. Kelly: Okay, quiet please. (Nathan asks to talk) Yes, Nathan?
Nathan: I can describe Lucas in one word... Bastard.

    • Brooke: I mean, I think about the future sometimes and it scares me. (pause) But then I think, "I'll go to college, I'll join the right sorority, I'll marry a rich guy." Unless I get fat.

    • Nathan: (to Lucas) You can't do it, can you? (Nathan shoots and scores) It's beautiful. I always wondered about it. We all do, right? (he shoots the ball in again) What happens when it's gone? But see, I've never really seen anybody lose it. Like really lose it. Until now. (he shoots again and then gives the ball back to Lucas) Go ahead man. Prove me wrong.
Lucas: I don't have to prove anything to you.

    • Karen: This wouldn't have anything to do with playing poorly, would it?
Lucas: How would you know?! You weren't even there?!

    • Nathan: Peyton, did you see how bad he sucked?
      Peyton: So?
Nathan: He was horrible. I've never seen a guy play so bad.
      Peyton: And you enjoyed that?
Nathan: Well, hell yeah. Didn't you? What is this, Peyton? Do you like this guy or something?
Peyton: You mean more than my boyfriend that I'm trying to make out with right now?
Nathan: Well, put some ice on it. You ever think I might want to talk?
Peyton: No, you don't. You want to celebrate a public humiliation and I'm sorry, that's a little played out.
Nathan: Oh and being with you isn't?

    • Haley: Hey, um, this game tonight. You're not playing anymore...
Lucas: No. You know I've never walked away from anything before, Haley?
      Haley: Yeah.
Lucas: But I can't do it. And even worse, I don't know why I can't do it. You know, it's like, no matter how confusing or screwed up life got, the game always made sense. It was mine, you know. And in a lot of ways it's who I am. But I can't be that person in their gym, or in their uniforms, or… in their world.
Haley: I hear you, Luke. But I know you. And I know that no matter what happens you're still going to be the same guy you always were. No uniform, no… whatever is gonna ruin that, you know?

    • Peyton: No practice today? (Lucas doesn't answer and hands Peyton her sketch book and her car keys.)
Peyton: What are you stalking me?
Lucas: I thought someone should see them.
Peyton: Well it's none of your business.
Lucas: You know what? You're right. It's none of my business. I wouldn't know anything about it.
      Peyton: I know you don't.
Lucas: Look, just tell me why you didn't submit them. You're stuff is good.
      Peyton: It's not good enough.
      Lucas: Look, Peyton, why not?
Peyton: I want to draw something that means something to someone! You know. I want to draw blind faith, or a fading summer, or just a moment of clarity. It's like when you go and see a really great band live for the first time, you know, and nobody is saying it but everybody is thinking it. We have something to believe in again. (pause) I want to draw that feeling... but I can't. And if I can't be great at it, then I don't want to ruin it. It's too important to me.
      Lucas: Yeah, me too.
      (Peyton gets in her car.)
Lucas: What about your sketch book?
Peyton: What about them? They don't mean anything to anybody, do they?

    • Karen: So, are you going to tell me about the fight, or are you wanna just assume that I know about it while I yell at you?
Haley: Is that the phone? I'll get it.
      Karen: Still here...
Lucas: Mom, he had it coming. You know, he said...
Karen: No, when they called me today, I was certain they had the wrong Scott. And then they told me they had two Scotts and I could take my pick. Honestly, Lucas, fighting in class? Fighting at all?
Lucas: The guy was being a jerk.
Karen: And this is suddenly a surprise to you? He hasn't been a jerk before?
Lucas: No. He's always a jerk.
Karen: So, why go down to his level?

    • Whitey: I'd stand up, but every time I do somebody kicks me in the ass for putting you on the team.

    • Haley: Did you ever pick out your porn name?
Lucas: What are you talking about?
Haley: Your porn name. Um, you know. You take the name of your first pet and your mother's maiden name, you put them together. What was the name of your first pet?
Lucas: You know that. I had a dog named Rocket.
Haley: Oh, Rocket. I loved Rocket. So, your mother's maiden name is Roe. Rocket Roe. Nice.
      Lucas: What's yours?
Haley: Oh, I had a bunny named Bunny.
Lucas: You named the bunny Bunny.
Haley: Yes, I did. And my mother's maiden name is Beaugard. So...
      Lucas: Bunny Beaugard.
Haley: Bunny Beaugard. Dawson's Freaks, starring Rocket Roe and Bunny Beaugard.
      Lucas: Nice.
      Haley: Shut up.

    • Peyton: What are you doing?
      Lucas: You just said-
Peyton: I didn't invite you in. I just asked if you wanted to. Thanks for the ride.

    • (Lucas fails to catch the ball on his first game)
      Peyton: Nice hands!
      Lucas: Nice Legs!

    • Brooke: (About Lucas) So that's the boy who beat up Nathan? He looks good from behind!

    • Whitey: What the hell is this?
      Mouth: We have this website.
      Jimmy: Yeah! We're sports announcers.
Whitey: Not in here, you're not. The locker room is closed. No Media!
Mouth: Did you hear that? We're media!
Jimmy: Not just media. We're banned media!

    • Karen: It's hard to fight the things we are afraid of. Sometimes we just need a little help.

    • Whitey: There's no shame in being afraid. Hell, we're all afraid. What you gotta do is figure out what you're afraid of because when you put a face on it you can beat it. Better yet, you can use it.

    • Lucas: (voiceover) Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swaps of the not quite, the not yet, and the not at all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists. It is real. It is possible. It is yours.

    • Karen: You've always loved the game. Even in the junior leagues. I remember when they issued you your first jersey and I couldn't get you out of that. You wore that thing for weeks. And then you decided to quit playing. Do you remember why? Lucas?
Lucas: I didn't want to see his face.
      Karen: Dan?
Lucas: I didn't want to be like him and I was afraid that I'd become him if I played. In the gym, I felt like he had a piece of me. I never felt like that on the playground.
Karen: Well, I'd say he's taken enough from us. I took the night off to watch my son play again. The way that he used to when he loved the game more than anything.

    • Haley: She doesn't want to go. She doesn't wanna see her high school sweetheart slash your brother Dan slash the jerk who abandoned Lucas slash the father of Nathan, the team's star player slash my wrists if I hear the story again. Let's go.

    • Whitey: You're gonna be okay.
      Lucas: Yeah, I am.

    • Lucas: (to Peyton) Your art matters! It's what got me here.
