About a half hour into the episode, you see Nathan shooting baskets. There is a quick cut to a board with the Ravens roster. It says Lucas is a sophomore, and Nathan is a senior, which doesn't make sense. First of all both boys are supposed to be juniors and secondly, Lucas was born just a few months prior to Nathan - if anything, Lucas is the older of the two. Also, show creator Mark Schwahn's name inexplicably appears at the bottom.
Brooke: (starts breathing shallowly) I can't breathe. There's no room in Chris' ego! Can we go?
Mouth: So Mr. Shaw thinks that getting your heart's desire is a tragedy? I say he's wrong. I mean, clearly Shaw never kissed Erica Marsh.
Whitey: I came to say I'm sorry. Dan, you were a great player. Maybe I was a lousy couch. Maybe I should have listened to you more and eased up a little bit. But we can bury all that now and do what's best for Nathan.
Dan: And you think High Flyers is what's good for him?
Whitey: I think he needs to get away and bathe himself in the game that you taught him to love. The game that gave you all the hopes and dreams it gave me. If saying I'm sorry will help your son, a kid who, by the way, I think the world of, then I'm sorry. I was wrong. And I mean that sincerely.
Dan: You know what, Whitey? You're right. I was a great player, and you were a lousy coach. Still are.
Nathan: Whitey thinks he can get me back into High Flyers.
Dan: As much as I love hearing you talk about basketball again, I really don't think camp is a smart play for you right now.
Nathan: Dad, it's High Flyers.
Dan: Exactly my point. You're injured Nathan. You don't want the scouts to see you like that. Plus, there's your mother to consider. Listen, I don't like to burden you with these things, but you're a man, so I'm gonna be honest with you. Your mother's pill addiction started when you moved out. Now in no way does that mean you're to blame, cause you're not. But she's gonna be vulnerable when she comes home, and she's gonna need you more than ever.
Jake: I need you to forget about me, and move on, okay? You're too amazing to carry this around. You're too full of greatness... and I love you too much. (They cling to each other). I have to go.
Peyton: No!
Jake: I can't have Jenny be with Nikki.
Peyton: Jake. Thank you.
Jake: You know I could've held you in my arms forever? It still wouldn't have been long enough.
Haley: Oh yeah, sorry about today with the fans, earlier. We were talking and, I just, I'm sorry.
Lucas: It's OK. It's OK; actually, it was kinda cool to… see how far you've come. You know, I'm proud of you.
Haley: But?
Lucas: It's killing him, Haley. I guess I just don't understand why it has to be one or the other: music or Nathan. I noticed you weren't… wearing your wedding ring.
Haley: It's not because of the record label. And it's not because I don't love him. I just… I feel like I don't deserve to. Things were so much simpler when it was just the two of us.
Lucas: But it's not.
Andy: (Smirks and walks to the yet again destroyed window) You know, leave all this. I plan to redecorate when I buy this place, anyway.
Chris: How's Nathan doing, anyway?
Lucas: Don't go there!
Chris: Oh, come on, man, you don't think I think about the guy? I'm a song writer; I carry all that crap around.
Lucas: Well, then you should know how he's doing! He's terrible!
Chris: Well, he should be. Haley's a great girl. It would suck to lose her.
Lucas: And you don't feel the slightest bit guilty about that?!
Chris: No, and I'll tell you why: this is a one in a million chance we're taking here. You gotta be selfish as hell; you're either all in… or you're out. You don't think I've tried to talk to her about it? In the middle of the night on some random bus ride? Hell, man, I've talked to her a lot more than you have these past few months. Listen, Luke, I know she's your friend, so… you can hate me for helping her chase her dream, but… I'm just trying to help her, now. You know? That same way you are. The rest, it's up to her.
Chris: Wow, yo-you angry or you just hitting on me?
Lucas: You ever tried singing with you jaw wired shut?
Chris: I guess you're angry.
Lucas: Do you think this is a joke? Because it's not. You're messing with people's lives; people I care about.
Chris: Messing how? You mean having sex with Haley? Cause I never did that. OK? Is that what you needed to hear?
Haley: I'm guessing you're here because of Nathan.
Lucas: Kind of.
Haley: You know that he told me not to come home, right? You know that?
Lucas: … Look, mostly, I'm here because of us, Haley. You know, I was… sitting in class… and… I looked over and saw your empty seat… and it struck me; that not too long ago, it was just you and me.
Haley: Yeah.
Lucas: Suddenly, it felt wrong; that you weren't there.
Haley: You think I was wrong for leaving.
Lucas: Here's what I think: you stood by me when I left the Rivercourt because a voice in my head told me that it's what I had to do. So I'm here for you, Hales. And I always will be. Even… when I don't understand it.
Haley: Thanks, Luke. Thank you. Because… sometimes I don't understand it either.
Nikki: (At the jail) Hi Jake, how's your sex life in there?
Jake: What do you want, Nikki?
Nikki: I just came to say goodbye.
Jake: You're leaving before the hearing?
Nikki: Yeah. This game's gotten old.
Jake: Well, I guess it's just as well. Once the judge hears my side of things it's not gonna matter if you're there or not. You know it.
Nikki: Do you know how it feels, Jake? Knowing that you'll never see your daughter again? Knowing that she'll never be a part of your life? You'll never see her walk… hear her laugh, or watch her grow.
Jake: Goodbye, Nikki.
Nikki: Goodbye, Jake. Oh, one more thing.
Jake: Yeah.
Nikki: The next time you wanna hide my daughter,… you've gotta do better that Florida. (She picks Jenny up and shows her to Jake.) Do you know how it feels, Jake? Never to see your daughter again? Because you will.
Jake: Nikki.
Nikki: Say goodbye to daddy, bunny. Forever.
Jake: Nikki. (Nikki gets up and starts leaving). Guard! Nikki! Somebody stop her! She's got my baby! Nikki, come on! Nikki! Nikki!
Brooke: (to Lucas and Haley) Um,… I'm in New York City and my parents have resumed allowances; I would be crazy not to shop right now so I'm gonna leave you two alone. OK? Good luck, see ya, bye.
Haley: Well, so what're you guys doing here?
Lucas: We bought your English assignment.
Haley: My- Oh my gosh, finals! Oh, god, that just feels like a totally different life.
Haley: Lucas! Oh my gosh. Hi.
Chris: Oh, well, it's about time the tribal leaders came to collect their squaw.
Haley: Oh, shut up, Chris.
Lucas: Yeah, shut up, Chris.
Chris: Alright, I'm going. (Stands and walks to Brooke.) Oh,… I see you couldn't stay away from me.
Haley: Out. I'm sorry. Oh, it's good to see you too, Brooke.
Brooke: Yeah, you too, fugitive girl.
Brooke: So it's kinda weird, us living under the same roof.
Lucas: It's not that weird.
Brooke: Yes it is. I mean, who would have thought this could have happened, back when we were together. You been talking to Peyton much?
Lucas: Little bit. I wish I was in her life more, you know?
Brooke: I guess I know what loss you'll be writing about for your essay.
Lucas: I lost myself this year, Brooke. And when I did, I lost the people I truly care about. Oh, by the way, um,… when we get to New York,… I hope you'll understand if we spend most of our time with Haley. It's just… important that I focus on her today. You know?
Brooke: Of course. Everything else can wait.
Whitey: (In his office.) Come in, Nathan.
Nathan: How'd you know it was me?
Whitey: I could smell the confusion. Pause. That was a joke, by the way. Nobody ever laughs at my jokes.
Nathan: That's cos they're not funny, Coach.
Whitey: A little bird told me you were moving back home.
Nathan: That little bird's name Lucas?
Whitey: He cares about you, and so do I. You've come quite a distance this year. I think moving out of that house has been good for you.
Nathan: Coach, look at me. I'm a mess.
Whitey: Nah, you're just a little bit broken. But it's nothing that a summer at High Flyers couldn't fix.
Nathan: Could have fixed.
Whitey: Still can. Dan Scott's not the only one with pull in this town. The only thing that held you back as a player last season was heart. Now, I've watched that change over the past year, and I've been so proud of you. That camp has world-class trainers. They can mend the physical part. I have a hunch, once that happens, the game will heal your heart.
Nathan: I dreamt about it, in the hospital, about going to that camp. But I don't know. My mom's coming home soon. I gotta think about it.
Whitey: Promise me you'll do that.
Peyton: Jake…
Jake: You've been calling my attorneys a lot.
Peyton: I thought I could help.
Jake: Well, you just pissed them off… at first. Then, you clearly weren't going away, so they went over Nikki's testimony line by line. And they found something. She lied, Peyton. She said that she'd been away at college but she wasn't. She hadn't been there in months.
Peyton: Well does, does that even matter, you know? Is that enough?
Jake: Well, yeah, any lie is a lie under oath. Once my attorneys get ahold of her transcripts, the judge is gonna lift the court order; I'll have sole custody of Jenny for a new hearing, and a chance to testify against all her other lies.
Peyton: That's so great, Jake. When do you get out?
Jake: A day or so, probably. And I'm gonna come find you as soon as I do. You did this, Peyton. You've given me hope. And I love you so much for it. (Peyton starts crying.) Hey, hey, come on. Don't cry.
Peyton: Haven't you ever cried when you're happy?
Karen storms into Dan's office
Karen: Deported!! What is wrong with you? Why can't you simply stay out of my life?
Dan: Why can't you?
Karen: Please, I've been ignoring you for the last 17 years.
Dan: Have you? Becuase you've been coming around quite a bit, Karen. I mean, with all your anger and outrage. Some would call it... passion.
Karen: Don't flatter yourself. Just back off Andy and Lucas and leave my world alone.
Dan grabs Karen as she walks away, and kisses her, she pulls away.
Dan: Isn't that what this is really about?
Karen: God!
Dan laughs evilly. Karen wipes her mouth and stomps out of the office. Dan adjusts his tie. Karen stops and considers what he just did. She rushes forward, grabs a steel chair and spins around, throwing it forcefully through his glass office window. Dan cowers away, trying to fend off the glass. He looks up at her.
Karen: Next time,… that'll be your face.
Lucas: You wanna go on a road trip this weekend?
Brooke: OK, where?
Lucas: New York, to see Haley.
Brooke: Alright, odd I know, coming from me, but we do have finals. The essay.
Lucas: I'll bring my laptop. Whoever sits shotgun can do the typing; whaddaya say, huh?
Brooke: And why Haley? Why now?
Lucas: Because we started the year together… and I can't end it without seeing her.
Erica: Hey sexy. What's wrong?
Mouth: I'm dead. I tanked my calculus final.
Erica: Are you sure? Maybe you did OK.
Mouth: Erica, we hung out all week and I was totally unprepared. And you can't exactly bluff your way through math, you know? God, my parents are gonna kill me.
Lucas: Look, I know you don't wanna hear this, but if you blow off this English final, you're not gonna even be eligible to shoot the… 'weak-ass jump shots'. It's about loss. I can help you if you want.
Nathan: You don't think I can write about loss?
Brooke: (to Lucas): I guess Haley's not coming back after all, huh?
Peyton: Jake.
Jake: You've been calling my attorneys a lot.
Peyton: I thought I could help.
Jake: Well, you just pissed them off.
Brooke: Jimmy Eat World, that's a great idea!
Peyton: Brooke, it'll probably never happen.
Brooke: Peyton Elizabeth Sawyer, you got The Wreckers and Pelthead to come and play, you can totally land Jimmy Eat World. And when you do, I promise I won't break up with you to run off and join their tour.
(Peyton's face drops and she looks into her locker sadly.)
Brooke: That's it, isn't it? That's why your heart's not totally in to finding a great band for the end of the school year. Haley and Nathan.
Peyton: Yeah, that and... (Has a flashback to her and Jake in the jail)
Brooke: (Talking to herself, nervously as she practices what to say.) Tree Hill student council is pleased to welcome- (Inhales) No. As president of the student council, I promised you guys a good time… (Pauses as she frowns, annoyed) I'm Brooke Davis and I'm an idiot, but, please welcome-
Peyton: Yes, losing your heart's desire is tragic... but gaining your heart's desire... it's all you can hope for. This year, I wished for love. To immerse myself in someone else and to wake a heart long afraid to feel. My wish was granted... and if having that is tragic, then give me tragedy. Because I wouldn't give it back for the world.
Haley: This year, I got everything I wanted and everything I wished for but, in a way, I lost even more.
Nathan: As far as I'm concerned, Shaw was a punk, 'cause you know what? Tragedies happen. What are you gonna do? Give up? Quit? No. I realize now that when your heart breaks, you gotta fight like hell to make sure you're still alive. Because you are... and that pain you feel, it's life. The confusion and fear, that's there to remind you that somewhere out there is something better... and that something is worth fighting for.
Brooke: George Bernard Shaw once wrote, "There are two tragedies in life. One is to lose your heart's desire. The other is to gain it." Clearly, Shaw had his heart broken once or twice.
Mouth: Because sometimes we have to step outside the person you've been, and remember the person you are meant to be. The person you wanted to be. The person you are.
Brooke: And once you lose yourself you have two choices: find the person you used to be or lose that person completely.
Peyton: The journey lasted eight months. Sometimes I travelled alone. Sometimes there were others who took the wheel... and took my heart. But when the destination was reached, it wasn't me who arrived... it wasn't me at all.
Nathan: And losing your way on the journey is unfortunate, but losing your reason for the journey is a fate more cruel.
Brooke: I can't breathe!
Haley: What?
Brooke: There's no room with Chris's ego!
Chris: (playing guitar as Brooke walks by his hotel room) Lucas and Haley aren't back yet, but you can come on into the devil's lair, put down your things, have sex with Chris Keller... whatever.
Lucas: And Hansel said to Gretel, "Let us drop these breadcrumbs so that together we find our way home, because losing our way would be the most cruel of things." This year, I lost my way.
Lucas: Shaw was right. As we strain to grasp the things we desire, the things that we think will make our lives better---money, popularity, fame---we ignore what truly matter--the simple things-- like friendship, family, love--the things we probably already had.
