Goodbye, One Tree Hill: The 8 Most Memorable Moments of the Past 9 Seasons

One Tree Hill is about to conclude its ninth and final season... but before we bid the show adieu, let's recall some of the most memorable moments from the past nine years.

  • Episode Summary

The aftermath of the school shooting and the death of Jimmy Edwards forces everyone in Tree Hill to examine their lives. Nathan reassesses his relationship with Haley, while Brooke and Rachel join forces to heal the student body. Dan must deal with the ramifications of shooting Keith, while Lucas and Peyton consider the implications of their kiss in the library.moreless

    • Aftermath...

The aftermath of the school shooting is emotional and sad, and at times very hard to watch.

Keith and Jimmy are dead and the survivors of the shootings all deal with the pain of it all. I completely understood why Lucas was resentful of people grieving for Jimmy - and his anger was intense, but I'm glad he and the rivercourt gang decided to go to his funeral in the end. Very touching moment. But Lucas also had to deal with an inconsolable Karen, who even went as far as to blame Luke for Keith's death. This was really shocking to hear and Karen's pain and grief was difficult to watch.

Brooke tried her best for Lucas, and that was nice to see. I'm glad he actually thanked her in the end. But this led to an important scene where Brooke apologises to Peyton for leaving her behind. Then she addresses the fact that it was Lucas that looked after Peyton as she could have been dying, and Peyton forgets to mention the kiss. Oh dear, we know what this leads to. BUT she did hook up with Pete from Fall Out Boy - loved how Brooke didn't believe her. Rachel tells Mouth she released the time capsule and becomes even more unlikable . Whitey's mourning of Keith was very sad cos he revealed that he got him through dark times when his wife died.

Meanwhile, Dan is dealing with guilt of killing Keith. The scenes with Keith was a child were actually quite chilling, nice to have Dan in a different place for once. Nathan and Haley truly realise they want to be back together and Nathan moves back into their apartment - bit soppy but sweet too.

      Powerful episode about grief here.

    • So sad, but sooo good!!

When I first saw this episode I spent the 3 weeks between the shooting and this episode just hoping that Keith was okay and that Dan would be in jail.

I guess it was easy to assume that Jimmy killed Keith, but I wanted to bad for there to be some evidence that would show Jimmy died before Keith did, but I guess they didn't look into it and just assumed Jimmy killed Keith and then himself.

Keith's funeral was so sad. I feel so bad for Lucas and Karen. It just sickens me that Dan is there looking all sad and distraught, but I love that he is being haunted for what he did. Jimmy's funeral was sad, too. I understand why, but it sucks that no one came. And even though he thinks Jimmy killed Keith I'm glad Lucas decided to go because it's the right thing to do.

I love that Nathan wants to move back in with Haley. They are finally going to be a family again!! And I love that Brooke decided to let them have the apartment and making them a new bedspread out of Karen's wedding dress material was so sweet. And Naley had another kiss in the "rain!" That moment on the football field was so cute!!

The best perfomrances in this episodes were definitley Chad and Paul. Chad did such an amazing job. He showed all the emotions that you feel when you are grieving and he did it so well. When he kicked the memorial for Jimmy...it was just wow!! So powerful.

Paul was amazing in this episode. I hate Dan so much for killing Keith, but Paul did an amazing job!! He played innocent and grief-stricken so well even though he isn't feeling any grief at all. He killed his brother and has no remorse for it and Paul plays it so well.moreless

    • Season 3, Episode 17.

WOW! No, really. WOW! This episode was really good! I never saw this episode because I only just started watching One Tree Hill in July. However, this episode was incredible. Many shows have done the school shooting thing, like Degrassi: The Next Generation, but this one was very well played out, even though this episode is only the aftermath. I just didn't like that they tried to make you feel sympathy for Jimmy Edwards, the shooter. I am aware he wasn't mentally stable, obviously, but he willingly killed himself and shot Peyton, who survived. In other storylines, Brooke looked hot like always, especially at the party. Haley was hot too, and she and Nathan make a great couple. Peyton and Brooke becoming roommates was a good storyline, and it's about time, since they've been friends for so long. 5 stars!moreless
    • Goodbye Keith...

Even if in the previous episode we saw that Dan shot Keith, I didn't want to realize that Keith was actually dead. The lost of this incredible and vey important character was really unexpected. And when a show leaves you breathless because something so unexpected happened, it means that we are talking about an amazing show. After this death I'm sure that many things will follow, important and determinant for every single character. In this episode we can see the beginning of all the changes that are coming, because before Keith's death there were projects and plans, and now they are completely devasted. Saying goodbye to Keith we get ready for the great episodes we will see.moreless

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    • TRIVIA (6)

      • Keith and Dan's parents were shown in season 1, ep. 12 "Crash Course in Polite Conversation." But they are not shown in this episode, which is odd considering their son was killed.

      • In the cafe, when Haley and Nathan walk in, above Lucas is a sign that says "All I can do is be me."

      • Each section of show was labeled with a title. They are as follows:

      • In the previous episode when Nathan tapes a line down the center of the room, the tape is gray, but in this episode when he takes it off, the tape is black.

      • When Karen asks Lucas if he pulled Dan out of the fire, Lucas drops the picture of him and Keith on the bed. But when Karen walks up to Lucas he is holding it in his hands again.

      • The scar from Nathan's car accident isnt shown when Nathan and Haley are in bed together. At first it looks like its there because there is a line, but as the camera moves, you see it's just his muscle and the scar isnt there.

    • QUOTES (28)

      • Whitey: Lucas, be the man that Keith taught you to be. Anything less will make this a much greater tragedy than it already is.

      • Dan: I saw the light.
        Karen: I doubt it.

      • Peyton: I made out with Pete from Fall Out Boy.
Brooke: It's ok Peyton, you don't have to make things up, we'll find you someone.

      • Whitey: (to Lucas) I've been meaning to talk to you, but the truth of the matter is I've been busy. Crying like a baby.

      • Larry: You know a Pete, from Freak Out Boy? Tattoo's, goofy grin, about as tall as a fire hydrant.
        Peyton: Fall Out Boy.
Larry: Yeah, whatever. I can't believe I'm about to say this to my high school aged daughter, but, he is waiting in that limo. And don't be long!

      • Lucas: Here, I'm taking my predictions back. Not gonna come true now anyway, not without Keith.
        Haley: Luke...
Lucas: My mom thinks that this was my fault.
Haley: She would not say that!
Lucas: Yep, she pretty much did. (To Nathan). We shouldn't have gone back into that school.
Haley: She's wrong. Luke, Keith would have gone into that school wether you were in there or not, because that is who he was. This is not your fault.
Nathan: Hey, she's right Luke. You did what he did. You went back in there to save a life, otherwise we might have been at Peyton's funeral.
Lucas: And I couldn't save Keith.
        Nathan: Neither could I.
Haley: He loved you a lot Luke, just like we do. And so does Brooke. You think none of your predictions are gonna come true? Look at the first one on your list. "This year, I'll try again with Brooke".

      • Karen: Did you pull Dan out of the fire?
        Lucas: Mom...
        Karen: Did you?
        Lucas: Yes.
Karen: You selfish, stupid boy. Did you think about me? Just once, think about me. And what my life would be like if I lost you. Running into burning buildings, high schools with guns. Did I raise an idiot?!
Lucas: I know! Okay, I know! It's my fault! If I didn't go back in there, Keith would still be here! And I know that! I'm sorry...
Karen: Well, sorry isn't gonna bring him back, is it.

      • Brooke: Lucas, please stay.
        Lucas: I can't Brooke, it's not...right.
        Brooke: Why not?
Lucas: You wouldn't understand, you weren't there.
Brooke: I may not have been inside that school, but that doesn't mean that I wasn't there. It doesn't mean that I don't carry that day around with me like everybody else.
Rachel: I was there. And if a party helps bring us all together, and helps everyone to deal with it, then why not?
Lucas: Rachel, you know that this is wrong, somebody died in that hallway.
Mouth: No, Luke. 2 people died.
Lucas: I'm sorry Brooke, I know you're trying to help me through this, and I love you for it, but I... I just, I can't.

      • Lucas: Do you really think a party is appropriate, Brooke?
Brooke: It's not a party, more of a cleansing for every kid in the school. You know, everybody's here, everybody's invited, everybody's together, so just check it out, okay. We've got co-ed bathrooms, science labs for drugs and pharmaceuticals, health class for condoms - and people probably using them. Spanish class has kick-*** Margarita's... and there's the Tutor Centre, for anybody that needs a little extra help. Tonight we're all together, and we stop judging each other, and let everybody heal their own way. If you need to do this alone, I understand. But if you need me, I'm here.

      • Haley: Hey roommate.
Brooke: Hey. This is the saddest thing, it's the material for Karen's wedding dress. I ordered it this morning...
        Haley: Yeah.

      • Junk: People loved Keith, you know. I was the worst mechanic on the planet, but he gave me a summer job because he knew I needed the money.
Fergie: We hung out that whole summer, talking old school basketball with him. Me, Skills, Mouth...
Mouth: And Jimmy. Jim's funerals on Tuesday.
Lucas: Jimmy Edawrds killed my uncle. Do not talk about him! Not in my mother's house

      • Haley: I guess people are just going to change, and go back to Karen's.
Nathan: People are definetely going to change.

      • Rachel: You have to let it go Mouth. It's not your fault.
        Mouth: I wasn't thinking that.
Rachel: Yes you were. You have this ridiculous notion that because you were friends once you could've saved him.
Mouth: What's so ridiculous about that?
        Rachel: Because you couldn't have.
Mouth: I was his best friend Rachel.
Rachel: How many times did the guy call you in the last year? C'mon look around. Everybody's here tonight, the geeks, stoners, jocks, maybe a few friends who forgot to stay in touch. That's how it's gonna change.
Mouth: But everyone's still divided. We stick to these rigid circles of friends based on sports we play or hobbies we like or how attractive or unattractive we are. When's that gonna change?
Rachel: Honestly? Probably never. Look, that's human nature. People stick to their own kind. If you want it to change, you change it. I'll help you.
        Mouth: How?
        Rachel: Dance with me!

      • Lucas: Coach...
Whitey: I know you want some answers, but what is the right answer? Because there is no answer, it's just life.

      • Lucas: Do you think there's a heaven Skills?
        Skills: Do I think there's a heaven?
Lucas: Yeah, you know, pearly gates, angels...
Skills: I dunno about all that, maybe some chrome gates and some freaky angels. Naw, but I do think there's somethin' else out there, and I do think whatever we do in this world matters in the next.
Lucas: You know before you came in I was thinking about Edwards, and how he could take Keith's life.
Skills: Look, he wasn't right dawg, Jimmy was sick.
Lucas: So if that's true, is heaven the kind of place that'll hold that against someone? 'Cause if not Jimmy's a victim and right now, in your world beyond this one, Jimmy and Keith are in the same place, and I can't figure out what kind of place that would be.
        Skills: It's a place you and I wouldn't understand.
Lucas: Or a place that doesn't exist.

      • Rachel: Nobody has all the answers, but we all have our why's. Like, why did this happen? Why didn't we see it coming? And why do people watch American Idol?

      • Brooke: Hey buddy.
        Peyton: Hey.
        Brooke: How's the leg?
Peyton: It'll be OK. How's the boy?
        Brooke: It'll be OK.
        Peyton: Oh!(Claps her hands together)
        Brooke: I'm sorry Peyton.
        Peyton: Why?
Brooke: 'Cause I shouldn't have left you there. I thought that you were behind me.
        Peyton: Brooke don't-
Brooke: No I should've made sure.
Peyton: OK,you're my best friend. And you wanna know what made me feel better when I was trapped in that library? It was knowing that Brooke's ok you know, my best friend, she's safe!
Brooke: I love you for that P. Sawyer. But there was something else that made you feel better in that library. My boyfriend. And I guess I can't hold it against him, can I? I mean, the boy I love protected the girl I love, as the girl that he loves too.
        Peyton: Brooke-
Brooke: No, we both know it's true!
Peyton: (Gets up while Brooke supports her so that she won't fall)
I want you to listen to me. I care about Lucas and I always will, but he's insanely in love with you, and you know what? So am I, you're my Brooke! I'm not gonna hurt you again.
Brooke: OK 'cause I really don't wanna hurt again.
Peyton: Come here.(They hug)You're something, you know that? I get shot and you're the one who needs consoling.
        Brooke: Sorry.(They laugh)You want a lift?
Peyton: Yes I do.(Peyton gets up on Brooke's back and they almost fall) Please don't fall! Am I that heavy?
        Brooke: No I got you.

      • Lucas: Peyton, I'm sorry about your mom. Both moms. I don't feel like I've been there for you the way I should have and I'm just sorry for that.
Peyton: You know how proud Keith must be of you right now?
        Lucas: I don't know if that's true.
Peyton: It is. Let Brooke help you out with this, ok? Don't shut her out.
Lucas: Why? Did she say something to you?
Peyton: No, I just know how you are. I'm the same way.

      • (Lucas and Peyton alone in the library)
        Peyton: Hey.
Lucas: You know we should really stop meeting up like this.
Peyton: I never did thank you.
Lucas: Hey (Lucas places his hand on Peyton's), it's okay.
Peyton: God I'm such a girl.
Lucas: (Mumbles audibly) You love me.
Peyton: Okay that is so not fair.
Lucas: You probably just want to kiss me again.
        Peyton: Dude, shut up!

      • Haley: I love this song. Do you think thats ok? To love a song, and feel good when you hear it and laugh and be happy, and be so in love with somebody, your heart aches I mean is that ok? Or is it just too soon?
Nathan: Its never, never too soon to feel like that. [they kiss]

      • Brooke: I was gonna sleep outside in my car but I heard a noise and thought it was a bear or something.
        Lucas: Where were you parked?
Brooke: Right outside here (points to outside Lucas' window)
Lucas: Have I told you how much I love you today?
        Brooke: Not really...

      • (Nathan and Haley in bed in his room.)
Nathan: My mom's coming home. She called.
Haley: Oooh! At least now, you won't have to live alone in this big, giant house.
Nathan: No, but she will. I want us to live together. I want to be your husband again, Haley!
        ( They kiss.)
Haley: That sounds so good to me! But I have a roommate named Brooke.
        Nathan: That doesn't matter.
Haley: And our dream schools are 3,000 miles away.
        Nathan: Doesn't matter.
Haley: And neither of us have jobs.
Nathan: It doesn't matter. Do you know how long it took me to realize that? The amount of time that it takes to pull a trigger. I love you, Haley James and that's all I need to know. It doesn't mean it's not going to be hard. It doesn't mean it's not going to be confusing. But whatever it is, we'll face it together.
Haley: You are quite charming, you know that?
Nathan: You haven't even seen my "A" game.
Haley: Oh Lord, help me if that's true.
(Nathan kisses Haley on her forehead)
Haley: Scott by the way. You called me, Haley James. Haley James Scott. (They kiss) It always will be! (They kiss again!)

      • (Nathan and Haley on the school football field)
Nathan: I want you to know something. If anything ever happens to me. If you ever lose me, I want you to know how happy you made me. How wonderful my life was with you and I always will be with you.
Haley: Nothing's going to happen to you.
Nathan: I know. I know you are right. But if it does, I want you to be okay Haley and know you made me happy. (The sprinklers come on and Haley laughs
        Nathan: You wanted rain!
Haley: It's not possible to be this in love.
( They kiss and Haley falls onto Nathan pushing them both to the ground )

      • (Rachel pulls Mouth in and kisses him)
Mouth: Why did you do that?
Rachel: Cos I don't think that you're going to like me 10 seconds from now.
        Mouth: Why?
Rachel: I released the time capsule. It's not your fault Mouth... it's mine.
        Mouth: You're right. I don't like you.

      • (Seeing Lucas dressed in a suit for Jimmy's funeral)
        Karen: What are you doing?
Lucas: It's what Keith would have wanted.
Karen: Absolutely not, you go to your room and you change!
        Lucas: No...
        Karen: I said go change!!
Lucas: It's what Keith would want.

      • Prinicpal Turner: (on the intercom) Welcome back students. Today, as we return to our school with heavy hearts, you will notice some changes. At the entrance to our school, you will see metal detectors. They are here for your safety. You will see an armed, police presence on campus, they are here for your wellbeing.
(Lucas sees the memorial for Jimmy in front of Jimmy's locker)
We can try to make the school safer, we can try to protect you, but there are few precautions that we can take to protect your hearts. I want to urge you all to reach out to your teachers and counsellors today. Form grief circles and talk about it. If you're feeling scared, if you're feeling vulnerable or confused, don't keep it inside, let it out.
(Lucas kicks the cards and candles, rips down the poster. He turns, stares at the crowd and walks away.)
You are not alone, and this is your school.

      • Haley: I guess everybody's gonna change and go back to Karen's. OK?
Nathan: People are definitely going to change.
Haley: (sighs) Will you unzip me?
        Nathan: Haley....I love you.
        Haley: I love you too.
Nathan: It's all so uncertain...God I love you. I don't ever want to come that close to losing you again. I need you to be safe. Ok?
Haley: I told you I'm not going anywhere.

      • Lucas: If I didn't go back in there Keith would still be here!

    • NOTES (6)

    • ALLUSIONS (3)

      • Rachel: There are a lot of unanswered questions... why do people watch American Idol?

American Idol, a talent show to find a singing superstar, airs on Wednesdays up against One Tree Hill in most locations.

      • 5 stages of Grief:

The 5 stages of grief were defined by Elsabeth Kubler-Ross in 1969 as the process people go through during a crisis or grief. They are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. In this episode, they switched bargaining with guilt and added fear before it.

      • Episode Title: Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them

"Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them" is an album from the band Murder By Death.
