This episode was powerful in that not only did it deal with bullying, but it showed the actions of one who is going through things, plus being bullied on top of that. Lucas and Nathan were brave in the fact that they both ran back in to save the people that they love.

This one touched me in the way that we all know at least one person who resembled Jimmy's character. Troubled, depressed, and angry at the world. The part that really got me at the end was Dan killing Keith. That brought the Kane and Abel dynamic to it. Dan was jealous of the fact that Keith was moving on with Karen, and that he, Karen and Lucas were going to be a family. He hated that, even though he always thought that he was better than Keith. This changed the dynamic of the show in that this forced all the teens to grow up, realizing that nothing should be taken for granted. This also eliminated happiness for Lucas and Karen. They would never have that ideal family that was within their grasp. Karen lost her potential husband, and Lucas lost his father. Although Keith was already the father figure in his life, they were going to make it legal. This took the show to a whole new level. Well done and enlightening.moreless
    • Shocking, powerful, amazing.

If you had to pick one episode of One Tree Hill as the best, I think With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept could be it. Powerful, emotional and shocking.

It was so shocking to see Jimmy take out that gun and shoot. And it didn't stop being shocking; as he pulled a gun in the tutor centre, threatened the lives of characters we've grown to love and eventually killed himself because it hurt too much. It was powerful to see everyone so sad and so scared. Everyone was brilliant in this episode. Even little moments like the school hallways being empty and littered with bags, of when Abbey is set free and just runs as fast as she can.

It's such a relatable topic - bullying and popularity in school and so this concept really worked. Despite having already watched this several times, it was still tense and I felt worried for everyone. Peyton was even shot and delirious and it was scary for us as well as her. Very gripping stuff - and that kiss with Lucas will come back to haunt her. Brooke outside the school was just as powerful. She realises how fucked up her world can be when a girl lies and says they're friends. Brooke breaks down and it's heart-breaking.

My only issue with the episode is its ending. It was shocking and dramatic, and creates interesting storylines, but Dan shooting Keith almost took something away from the power and message of the episode to me. It's also incredibly sad because Keith was just starting to live his life with Karen. Damn it writers.

Amazingly well done and powerful episode of TV, let alone Tree Hill.

    • not my favorite storyline

      2.5
I had mixed feelings on the shooting epsioe because it didn't convey the fear of being in real shooting because in a real shooting students and teachers wouldn't be trying to reason with the shooter. they would be trying to find a way out or praying that help would soon. and the fact that the Scott men were able to break SWAT relugations to go back into the school was riduise. and the last 5 mins of the show didn't make any sense at all by having Dan shoot Keith devalue the entire epsiope. and i agree with the reviewers that said that he or she was surpised that the puducers of the show didn't get sued, because the mermoery of what happened at Columbine and Virgina Tech is still very raw and painful. so in end those are my reasons for not liking these storyline.moreless
    • Possibly the best TV episode ever!

      10
"With Tired Eyes,Tired Minds,Tired Souls,We Slept" is undeniably the best episode of any tv show i have ever seen. It's truly a masterpiece of television. There have been a lot of hostage situations in many TV shows, like the recent Grey's Anatomy season finale but this one is different. It actually has a profound meaning and that is bullying.Mark Schwahn really outdid himself with this episode and showed how bullying has a huge effect on people.

The episode is directed, written and acted perfectly,in my opinion.i think this episode sets One Tree Hill apart from other teen shows because the show proved that it was more than hookups or love triangles.

The episode is very intense, emotional and shocking.Jimmy Edwards walks into school with a gun seeking justice for the way he's being treated, putting everyone's lives in danger. You can tell that Jimmy is desperate and his words are just so moving.I cried so hard when he was talking about what he has been through alone since all of his friends abandoned him. Some of his lines like "I wanted them to leave me alone.I wanted them to like me" always get to me.Since i have been bullied i can somewhat relate to his words.I'm sure this episode helped a lot of teenagers deal with bullying.I know it helped me.

Peyton actually gets shot and she crawls into the library when Lucas joins her trying to help her and then they share an epic Leyton moment.Me being a Leyton shipper i loved their scenes.

And of course ,this episode ended with Dan killing Keith which was a defining moment for the show and definitely changed everything. It's very shocking to see a man killing his younger brother just out of spite.

And by the way, there is a scene between Brooke and a reporter that is very emotional and amazing but unfortunately it isn't included in the episode but only as a deleted scene but it's really an outstanding and powerful scene.

All in all, this episode is so amazing and raw.It is my favorite TV episode ever and that's probably never gonna change!Long Live One Tree Hill!moreless
    • Wow! Best episode ever. Very touching and moving. A must see for anyone whether you're a fan of One Tree Hill or not.

I wish I had reviewed this episode after it first aired. Oh well. So, I have watched it again for the millionth time and I decided to review it. This is truly the best episode of One Tree Hill. It was the best episode at that time and it is still the best episode. One Tree Hill is one of a kind and this episode shows just how awesome and unique it is.

No other show had done such a powerful episode before or since. The closest I can think of is the 7th Heaven episode "Johnny Get Your Gun" It too was a powerful and moving episode, but no where near the emotional strength of this episode.moreless

    • TRIVIA (5)

      • In the opening scenes Rachel can be seen outside on the quad with Bevin and a few other girls so how did she end up in the tutor center?

      • Abby Brown is insulin dependent, but when Haley noticed that she wasn't feeling so well, Abby says she needs her insulin. However, when a person's blood sugar drops to dangerously low level, that person needs sugar to get it back to normal. Taking insulin will further reduce the person's blood sugar level.

      • Keith put his hand over Jimmy's fresh bullet wound, which would have caused blood to run onto his hand. Wouldn't the investigators find it odd that Keith had Jimmy's blood on his hand if Jimmy shot him first?

      • When Jimmy fires his first shot... its at shoulder height... but Peyton is hit in the leg right below her knee, because (as it's later said) she was hit with a ricochet.

      • It seems too unreal that when Keith and Dan receive a text message from Nathan's cell phone, they thought it was legitimate enough to break SWAT team regulations and procedures.

    • QUOTES (43)

      • Mouth: Dude, what's happening?!
Nathan: Mouth! What're you doing here?
Mouth: I was in the AV-
        Nathan: Shush.
Mouth: I was in the AV room and I come out and it's like 'Dawn of the Dead'.
Nathan: Mouth, don't say 'dead'. Someone's got a gun in the school.
        Mouth: What?
        Nathan: Yeah.
Mouth: We gotta get outta here.
Nathan: Yeah, you gotta get outta here. I gotta go get Haley.
        Mouth: I'll stay with you.
        Nathan: Let's go.

      • Brooke: Peyton! Peyton! Peyton!!
        Whitey: What the hell?!
Brooke: Somebody has a gun inside and they're shooting.
        Nathan: Haley!!
Whitey: My god! Everybody back on the bus!
Brooke: I lost Peyton. I don't know where she is. I mean, she was right there and a shot went off and now she's gone and I...
Lucas: Look, wh-a-hey-hey, Peyton was shot?
Brooke: No, I don't know! She was right behind me; we were by the library!
Nathan: Haley's in the tutor center.
Whitey: All students on the bus! Code red, now!
        Whitey: Let's move! Come on.
Whitey: Nathan, get your ass on that bus!
        Lucas: I got him, Coach!
        Brooke: Luke!
Lucas: Look, I'll be right back. Nathan!
        Whitey: Boys! Boys!
Nathan: Got off me, man! Haley's inside!
        Lucas: Nathan!
        Brooke: Lucas! Lucas!
Whitey: Get on. Gary, ride, go, go!

      • Reporter: We're a country obsessed with tragedy, Brooke, so if examining tragedy makes me part of the problem, then so be it. But let me ask you something, how much time have you spent with Jimmy Edwards over the last 4 years?
(Brooke goes quiet and looks away.)
Reporter: So maybe I'm not the only one who should be ashamed.
(Brooke starts to cry but stops as someone approaches her.)
Glenda's mom: Brooke? Hi, I'm Glenda's mom, I was wondering if you'd seen her.
Brooke: I'm sorry, I don't know anyone named...
Glenda's mom: Glenda Farrel, She's in your class, she said you two were friends.
Brooke: Glenda! I thought you said Brenda..I'm sorry. Sure, I'll find her.
(Brooke goes outside to cry because she doesn't know who Glenda is.)

      • Brooke: There are kids inside our school fearing for their lives right now. Terrified that someone is going to put a gun in their face and pull the trigger, and you wanna know how I'm feeling? Our pain is not a commodity for you. It's not a newsbyte to boost your ratings. Because tomorrow, or the next day, or the next week when WE go back to school, changed forever by a day that'll never leave us, where are you gonna be? At the next TRAGEDY? Thrusting your microphone at the next fractured person asking them how they feel? Lady, that is not journalism, YOU are not contributing anything to society. You are buzzards, circling the carnage, but you prey on the living. THAT is how I'm feeling. But something tells me you're not gonna air that.
(Brooke walks away leaving the reporter humiliated.)

      • (Reporter is watching clip of Jimmy's entry on the time capsule on her laptop. Brooke closes the laptop.)
Brooke: A little insensitive, don't you think?
Reporter: And who might you be?
Brooke: Brooke Davis, student council president.
        (Reporter walks to face camera)
Reporter: I'm here with student council president, Brooke Davis. Brooke, Can you put into words how you might be feeling about this tragedy?
Brooke: You should be ashamed of yourself.
        (Brooke walks away.)

      • (Brooke is sitting on the bleachers and observes a student being hugged by her parents)
Reporter: Does that warm your heart? Do you think America would tune in for that every night?
Brooke: Have you seen the ratings for 7th Heaven?

      • Haley: Always?...
        Nathan: and Forever.

      • Jimmy: What's my name?
        Abby: Jim.
        Jimmy: My full name.
        Abby: I don't know!
Rachel: You're the guy from the time capsule.
Haley: Jimmy Edwards. Jimmy Edwards. You're a good guy, and you are better than this.

      • Peyton: (crying, hurt and scared) Lucas, I lost Brooke, I'm sorry!
Lucas: She's fine, she's fine. But, ok, you're not. We gotta get you somewhere safe, come on.
        Peyton: No, I can't. I can't walk I tried.
Lucas: Ok. (Lucas gets up from kneeling beside her)
Peyton: No, don't leave me please!
Lucas: No, look. I'm gonna go block the entrance. We'll just hide, all right? Listen to me, ok? I'm not leaving you Peyton! I won't, ok? I won't!

      • Lucas: Nothing will happen to you, I promise!
        Peyton: You're always saving me.
        Lucas: Somebody's got to.

      • Rachel: What about the windows? I mean, we could break the windows and get out.
Haley: No, that's...it's...it just goes to the courtyard – it's enclosed. It's for light.
Skills: Yeah, besides, we need to break in all the windows; all we do is draw attention to ourselves.

      • Jimmy: Everyone here is a loser. And the truth is: everyday I have to come to this school, is one less day I have to come back.

      • Nathan: Lucas, I have to find Haley.
        Lucas: I know.

      • Jimmy Edwards: What are you doing? What's in your pocket?
        Haley: Nothing!
Nathan: Ok! Ok! Stop pointing the gun at her alright?
Haley: It's just my cell phone.

      • Mouth: We gotta get out of here.
Nathan: Yeah, you gotta get outta here. I gotta go get Haley.
Mouth: (looks down at the bat Nathan's carrying) I'll stay with you.

      • Peyton: It's not glass in my leg, is it?
        Lucas: No it's a bullet.

      • Brooke: I'm sorry I don't know you.

      • Mouth: When I came out it was like Dawn of the Dead.
        Nathan: Don't say dead, Mouth.

      • Jimmy: You know they're going to remember me as a monster but I wonder how they'll remember you?

      • Keith: I'm not gonna leave you here son. I'm not gonna do that and i'll tell you why. Cause I've been there. I've bought the gun, and i planned on using it ok. I've been there. And I wanna tell you something, It gets better.
        Jimmy: Not this, it can't.
Keith: It does Jimmy. That pain in your stomach, that pain in your heart, it goes away. That voice in your head thats saying there's no way out, it's wrong Jimmy. Would you please, please just believe me. It gets better.
Jimmy: It won't! Not after this! I cant take this back! I can't erase this! (starting to cry) She's gonna die.
        Keith: You don't know that.
Jimmy: I just... I wanted... I wanted them to leave me alone. I just.... I wanted them to like me.
Keith: I understand son. It's what we all want. Thats all any of us want.
Jimmy: I'm not here..... I'm not here.
Keith: Jimmy please..... it's gonna be ok son... it's gonna be ok.
Jimmy (pounding on his chest): But it hurts! It hurts! It always hurts!
        Keith: I know..... please... please....
        Jimmy: I'm sorry......
        Keith: NOOOOO!!!!!!!

      • Rachel: 700 days. High School, out of 20 or 30 thousand, can't you see past that. It's only 700 days.

      • Brooke: Hey, Glenda. I'm really sorry I don't know you.
Glenda: That's okay, I know you.

      • Abby Brown: What's wrong with you? He's just a kid. We're all just kids and we just have this life and the things you say and do, we feel that. How can you have so much hate in your heart? How can you act like it doesn't matter? It does matter. What happened to us? We're just kids. We can't be like this. It's not possible.

      • Peyton: We had a snow day. Sixth grade, do you remember? It was like this whole other world just came in overnight and took ours away. Brooke, she came over and we made a snowfort... with a tunnel. And we stayed in there all day. It seemed so safe, like everything was okay. Like everything our world was about to become, maybe we could just stop it and stay little kids for one more day. But then it got cold, kinda like now. They're gonna come now. All of them. The reporters and the psychologists and the analysts. And the so-called experts. And they're gonna try and make sense of this. But they're not gonna be able to. And even if we do make it out of here, we're always gonna carry it with us. Its never gonna be the same.

      • Jimmy: You think so. You really think I am the only one. Then ask yourself this. Have you ever treated someone like crap in this school or left anyone out? Have you ever broken up with someone in the time it takes to pass a note and disappear? Or talk trash behind their back? Or maybe you just ignored it all? You know why you worry about the big game or the prom or the bake sale for the pep club. You ask yourself that and then you tell me if there is anyone else out there.

      • Peyton: Luke... It was your friend. The one from the time capsule. He had the gun. But he didn't look evil... angry. He just looked scared.

      • Mouth: It's not suppose to be this way. The artists, and the scientists, and the poets - none of them fitted in at 17. We're suppose to get passed it. Adults - they see kids killing kids, and they know it's a tragedy because they used to be those kids - the bullies, and the beaten, and the loners. We're supposed to get passed it. You're supposed to live long enough to take it back. Just take it back.

      • Jimmy: How bout you, Hero? You scared?
        Nathan: Yeah, I'm scared.
Jimmy: Good! Welcome to my world!

      • Nathan: Haley's in the tutor center!

      • Peyton: (to Lucas) Luke, if I say 'I love you,' right now, would you hold it against me? Because I've lost alot of blood....come here. (They kiss lightly)

      • Lucas: Hey, Nate...
        (long pause)
        Nathan: Yeah, you too.

      • Lucas: You're gonna stop a bullet with a baseball bat? Hey Nate, Nathan, someone has a gun in here!
Nathan: Lucas, I know that, okay, I know this is stupid. But what if something happens to Haley? What if we walk away and something happens to haley. Are you gonna be able to live with that?
Lucas: Most heroes are dead Nate.
        Nathan: It's 'Haley' Lucas.

      • (Haley and Nathan whispering)
Haley: You shouldn't have come back for me. I love you for doing it but I wish you were safe.
Nathan: I don't want to be safe without you.

      • Nathan: Guys like me, huh? You can pass judgment on guys like me all you want but someone stereotypes you and there is gunplay?

      • Lucas: Does this darkness have a name? This cruelty, this hatred, how did it find us? Did it steal into our lives, or did we seek it out and embrace it? What happened to us? That we now send our children into the world like we send young men to war... Hoping for their safe return... But knowing that some will be lost along the way. When did we lose our way? Consumed by the shadows, swallowed whole by the darkness. Does this darkness have a name? Is it your name?

      • Jimmy Edwards: Open your eyes, open your eyes!

      • (Haley whispers through the door)
        Haley: Always..
        (Nathan whispers back)
        Nathan: And forever.

      • Lucas: She's gonna die!

      • SWAT Team: We have a hostage situation.

      • Lucas (to Brooke): Wait, Peyton was shot?

      • Brooke (to Lucas): I lost Peyton.

      • Jimmy: Don't push me!

      • Nathan (screaming): Haley's inside!

    • NOTES (9)

    • ALLUSIONS (4)

      • Mouth: I was in the A/V room and I come out and it's like Dawn of the Dead.

Dawn of the Dead is a movie where the dead aren't dead. They're turned into zombies and they are running around seeking blood.

      • Jimmy Edwards: This ain't the Breakfast Club.

Breakfast Club is a famous John Hughes movie where 5 students get stuck in detention.

      • Brooke (to reporter after seeing families hugging): Have you seen the ratings for 7th Heaven?

7th Heaven is one of One Tree Hill's sister shows and has been the most popular and most watched series on the WB Network since 1996. Amazingly, no other WB show reached anywhere near the level of ratings success that 7th Heaven has, at one point attracting 9 million viewers on a regular basis.

      • Episode Title: With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept
