"Diamonds Are for Heather" is being unfairly considered one of the worst episodes ever. That's not true! It's actually good to watch if you give it a chance.
Del Boy Trotter has the Yuletide Blues, and drinks away his loneliness in Spanish night at the Nag's Head.
There he meets Heather, who seems to be one friend short of company. Del Boy, ever the gentleman, entertains her and sees her home safely. At her flat he discovers that she has a young son, to a husband who seemed to have joined a very long queue at the Job Centre 18 months ago and never come back.
In no time at all their romance blossoms, and all is running so smoothly, Del Boy decides to propose. However, when he takes her for a candle-lit curry, Heather refuses Del's offer of marriage. Her husband has returned, employed as a department store Santa, and she wants to give it another go...leaving Del without an angel for Christmas. But Del Boy cheers up in the end when he orders a group of carol singers to sing Old Shep.
Y'see, it's a real good episode character-wise for Del. The idea behind "Diamonds Are for Heather" was to demonstrate Del Boy's love for children, and that he really could be a family man if he put his mind to it.
Granted - it does show a different side to Del's personality that was later developed further with Raquel and Damien later in the series.
A lovely but forgotten episode, far more deserving of the accolade "classic" than its predecessor. In other words, anybody who hates this episode is a gay plonker! Anybody who likes this episode is a true OFAH fan.moreless
