In this episode John Sullivan dared to set the last fifteen minutes in one (cramped) room, with the three main characters just talking. The Soviet threat may be a bit outdated, the discussion about fear and war still stand up. As usual Del and Rodney can turn serious topics in hilarious dialogue. An exception to this is Grandad's speech about World War One. Perhaps because it originates from the daftest character, its seriousness surprises and becomes very touching.

At this point in the series secondary characters just showed up once in a while. The main focus was clearly on Del and Rodney. It was different from the later seasons, but certainly not less entertaining and poignant.moreless

    • Del: I'm not a ruthless mercenary. Who is it that goes around the estate every Christmas time, making sure all the old people have got enough to eat and drink? Rodney: Yeah, and who was it, during the Brixton riots, that drove down in the van, selling paving stones to the rioters? I mean, what did you think they were going to do with them, eh? All run off home and start building patios? Del: Mine is not to reason why, mine is to sell and buy. Edit
    • Rodney: I'd never wear a British uniform on principle. Del: What principle? Rodney: Well, on the principle that the Russians might shoot at it. Edit
    • (Del and Rodney have just been stopped by a police officer during their attempt to beat the four minute warning to get to Grandads' allotment. The police officer has just walked off) Del: How are we doing for time Rodney? Rodney: (looking at his watch) Erm, we died 45 seconds ago. Edit
