Netflix (Returning June 17, 2016)

Netflix doesn't play by regular rules. Netflix do what Netflix wanna do! The DVD rental service turned online streaming powerhouse turned television revolutionary has made a bold move that only whippersnappers like Starz are wont to do. Netflix has ordered a 13-episode second season of its new series Orange is the New Black, even though the first season hasn't yet aired. Season 2 is scheduled to launch in 2014.

Whaaaaaaaaat!? Yep, that's what we call a vote of confidence in this industry. Netflix must feel what we've currently only prognosticated from the series' excellent trailer (which I've embedded below). Orange is the New Black comes from Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, and the series is an adaptation of the memoir of the same name. It's about a womens' prison, guys! And it looks really good!

Netflix previously ordered a second season of its first original drama, House of Cards, before that show's first season even aired. But that was always in the—ahem—cards, as 26 episodes for two seasons were ordered right off the bat. More recently, Netflix ordered a second season of its horror drama Hemlock Grove, but only after Season 1 aired. The early renewal of Orange is the New Black obviously means Netflix really likes what it sees. Renewals before a show even airs aren't common, but they do happen. Starz, for example, has been quick on the trigger, recently ordering a second season of Boss before its first season ever aired and renewing Da Vinci's Demons after one episode. Boss has since been canceled.

Netflix will release the entire first season of Orange is the New Black on Thursday, July 11.

I watch ALOT of Netflix, and after desperatly awaiting the arrival of a spunky new series, I stumbed upon what seems, to me, the greatest dramatic series since Breaking Bad. I was bummed to find out that season 2 of Orange is the New Black won't be aired until 2014, but I give ultra props to the writers for keeping me on the edge of my seat with how season 1 ended.
Oh dear Netflix, Ill be awaiting the day of season 2's arrival!!

I was unsure about this show, but because we now know we'll get a 2nd season, I'll definitely be watching Orange is the New Black.

@NBC: Stick it!

Going into a show knowing there will be at least 2 season is wonderful news. This will teach those guys at ABC/NBC about cancelling shows when its only 3 episodes old. It will piss people off so much they would not want to watch any new show on your network!

I must say I feel better about Netflix's 0/26 deal than the 10/90 deals with Roseanne Barr at NBC, Tyler Perry at TBS, and Charlie Sheen at FX.

My first reaction?

Screw the story...I've just been promised 26 hours worth of Kate Mulgrew!!!

My second reaction?

Well, isn't that just lovely. With a promising trailer, intriguing plot, and handsome line-up of talented actors, I look forward to becoming engrossed in the world of lady prison folk.

Hmmm. While I'm happy for Netflix that they're in the position to renew all their new ground-breaking 13 episode series, without the release of any data on how many people have watched them, it makes me very sceptical. It makes it seem hat they just have lots of money and want to let people think all their shows are doing extremely well and are deserving of a second season.

I've only seen House of Cards, and that was okay, but I'm not sure how likely I am to watch another. I was going to watch Hemlock Grove, but I heard all the bad reviews, and assumed it wouldn't be renewed, although now it has been anyway. And now renewing a show before it's even aired? There's a difference between risky business and just being plain silly, and I think Netflix are fast approaching that boarder.

The fact that they do/did take a chance on their series is what I like about their "silly/risky" business practice. What do they have to lose?

well i most say this series is very good and worth watching, see it for your self I think you will like it!

I have and I like it quite a lot, I'm so glad it got a second season, it's not that I was saying their shows are bad - just that I don't understand their marketing.

Sorry, I hope you don't take this the wrong way..but what's it to ya what Netflix does? They can do what they damn well please!
You've got a lot of NERVE to to say Netflix's business approach is silly.

I have seen Orange is the New Black and damn well happy it got renewed. The other shows on Netflix I haven't checked out..mostly because the genre's don't interest me.

You are right. Netflix can do whatever they please, and I admire that they are pioneering a new age of online television content which can be nothing but good for the industry.

I'm just saying that they shouldn't go around claiming that all of there shows have been extremely successful and been watched by large amounts of people if they aren't willing to back those claims up with actual figures.

wow, that actually looks quite promising. I was going to give it a shot based on Jenji and the premise alone anyway but now looking forward to it even more. hooray for a split second of shane botwin's detective friend!

also starz gave magic city 2 seasons off the bat did it not? in that case I think it kinda sucks though; I enjoyed the first season a fair amount this season feel really different though and not in a good way.

This is the only netflix series so far that looks interesting enough to watch (for me). Even though I have tons of shows to watch on cable that will keep me busy for ages, I may still get myself a netflix compatible blu-ray player and sign up for netflix just to watch this show.

not sure if it interest you but I use a western digital media player. it offers USB playback for the typical formats and then offers netflix and hulu streaming as well as some others like cinemanow which is a rental deal.

I think it looks really great, definitely has that Weeds vibe(Which I LOVED)! So I'm not surprised it would be given a season 2 all ready. I think they are more doing that as a business stand point that its other originals have done so well. Which I AM surprised about the news of Hemlock Grove getting a second season though.. Guess I was the only one who could not even finish the first episode because of how terrible I thought it was.

Also, even the song played during the trailer sounds like something that would have been played on Weeds... Anyone know what that song is?

I didn't give hemlock grove a chance at all due to how terrible I thought it looked based on the trailer.

Even though there's more than one tune in there that would fit into Weeds I'm gonna assume you mean "A Better Son/Daughter" by Rilo Kiley who was also part of the Weeds soundtrack using the tune "With Arms Outstretched"

OK, wow. Netflix really seems to be set on building up a solid set of series that go beyond one season, which should help make people trust Netflix more than a channel that seems to have their finger on the trigger the whole season in case the ratings aren't that great.

As mentioned, they already ordered a second season for House of Cards right from the start, and already ordered a second season of Hemlock Grove. They haven't officially renewed Arrested Development for a 5th season, but have said that they're open to making it happen if that's the route that the creators want to take (and if the cast can help make it happen). Also, given the contract for 300 hours of content from Dreamworks, there's a good chance of some of those shows will receive a second season if enough people watch those.

It's also funny that both international series (that I know of), which are exclusively on Netflix in America (Lilyhammer and The Fall) have both been picked up for a second season. Obviously those decisions weren't made by Netflix, but it certainly helps maintain the appearance of stability that Netflix seems to be trying to build with its shows.

As I said in the first article with the trailer, I'm not exactly sure how much I'll like this show (though I'll definitely give it a chance), so I don't know if this renewal will affect me, but I hope this trend continues with future series.

Netflix is just a bonus to all the other good stuff released recently. The trailer for Orange convinced me. I really like House of Cards and the Arrested Development resurrection was okay too--Hemlock Grove, not so much. Who says there's nothing to watch in the summer--certainly not me...

Weeds had the benefit of being whatever it wanted to be, whereas this has to have an air of realism to it and that gives me the fear. If I don't see at least one I can't believe it's not butter hand rape scene within 3 ep's it's parole time.
