  • Having a robot for a wife can lead to problems.

    8.0
A rare comic episode for this series, in which a nerd, anxious not to be pressurized into marriage by his aged relatives, solves the problem by inventing his perfect dream girl - a cunningly disguised android who can clean the house and cook the meals without ever demanding anything more of him, or even talking to him. Of course, his plans go comically awry and he finds that real life cannot be avoided. There is a subtext about the male dread of femininity - and the need of men to subjugate their wives - which would have made the play very interesting to the women's movement just a few years later. The scene where an elderly bottom-pincher gets a comeuppance he wasn't expecting stays in the mind after all these years.moreless

    • Unfortunately, there seem to be no extant tapes of this play in the BBC Archives.

    • This episode was one of a handful from this series to be repeated on BBC-1, not as part of a science-fiction series, but as a single play. The BBC-1 repeat was a month after its original airing, on December 29th, 1965.

  • NOTES (1)

    • One wonders, did Kate Wilhelm, the authoress of the original story, ever see a British comedy film of the late 1940s called The Perfect Woman, which features a female robot passed off as a real person? Wilhelm, who was married to the legendary science-fiction writer Damon Knight, published her first story in 1956.
