  • Could such a series be possible nowadays?

    One common objection to science-fiction on television in the old days was that there wasn't the money or the technology for it. But there was the enthusiasm, and there was the intelligence and there was the imagination - and this show, especially in its first two seasons, showcased these virtues memorably. It was in a class by itself as TV s-f; something like "The Outer Limits", enjoyable as it often was, couldn't come close to its level of sophistication. Now, of course, TV has the money and it surely has the technology. Dazzling special-effects work has become routine, people take it for granted. But TV s-f doesn't have the brains any more. Come to that, TV itself doesn't. Sad.
