    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • Goof: When the team looked at their map to plan the hike to their new camp in the last episode, it showed them having to cross a lake. But when the route is shown charting their route, they as shown to be traveling between two smaller lakes, without having to canoe across, which is incorrect. The same mistake was made at the end of the last episode.

    • QUOTES (6)

      • Jake: (as Jake gives Carolyn a new hairdo to cheer her up) Now, I have to warn you, I've never cut hair, but I am gay, so it's pretty much...
Carolyn: It's innate in your DNA.
        Jake: It's instinct.

      • John: (as they eat fish stew) Oo, got an eyeball. Um, rubbery.
        Trish: You're chewing it?!
        John: Yeah.
        Trish: Okay...

      • Trish: (after bagging a duck) I'm so excited! Finally like a normal dish- not a squirrel, or a porcupine, but a real duck!

      • Trish: (gleefully holding up a squirrel) I got dinner! I caught it with the shovel.
Jake: (in an interview) Trish had got it with a shovel- little barbaric, but we're not going to be picky about that.

      • Carolyn: (as they follow their first man-made trail in Alaska) We just want to see what's around that bend, over that mountain, because someday it's gonna be civilization.

      • Trish: (about their hike to their next camp) It felt like a death march. We walked in steps like we had bricks on our feet.

    • NOTES (1)

      • In this episode, Jake is officially "out" as being gay. He is said to be the first openly gay man on a Discovery Channel TV show. The rest of his team members were aware of this the whole time, as Dan talked with him early on about his experiences with coming out with his family back home. Dan has a cousin who's gay, so he wanted to make sure that Jake knew he respected and accepted him for who he was, which Jake in turn appreciated.

    • ALLUSIONS (1)

      • Carolyn: Drink the Kool Aid!

Carolyn jokes that if they have to stay out in the wild much longer, they'd all commit group suicide together. Her black humor is a reference to the 1978 mass suicide of the followers of the cult leader Jim Jones at Jonestown, Guyana. Jones persuaded his followers to drink cyanide laced Flavor Aid (similar to the Kool Aid it's usually mistakenly identified as) after the group's projected asylum in the Soviet Union was denied due to the killing of a US Senator and a number of other people.
