  • The work that they did to the T-bird on this episode was well done, and IMO seemed to me to be mostly in good taste. I wish they would have spent more time though with longer camera shots of the completed product.moreless

    This episode was pretty good overall. My major complaint with this show (and most of their other episodes) is that when the car is complete, they edit the camera shots to give you approx 1 sec per view to see the different changes. You never really get to see the car. It turned out to be a beautiful car but would like to seen more of the finished product. I am not sure I would have had the top cut off, as they did not say anything about re-enforcing the floor. Additionally, I didn't like the Chip Foose - designed wheels at all. I've also attached the below technical review that is quoted from Mr. Ken Harkema. He is an expert on 1964-1966 Ford Thunderbirds and participated as a consultant for this specific episode. "I will answer some of the questions regarding the Overhaulin TV show aired last night (16 Aug 2005). The work was done in Huntington Beach and we were there from June 13th through June 20th. Yes, all of the work that was shown on the show was done in this period. The reveal was done about 8PM on the 20th because there was so much left to do on the car on the last day."

    "My understanding when I was hired by the production company was to act as a consultant on things relevant to Thunderbirds. And I did that. But a majority of my time was spent hands-on. I was assigned by Chip to do wiring, dash, and windows. I assisted on drivetrain, rear axle, brakes, and anywhere else I could including holding body panels in place while they were welded. I removed the a/c system including the heater box and replaced with the non-a/c heater box from the crushed car. That decision was made once it was determined the cars top would be removed. All of the a/c components were non-functional on Mike's car and to get the a/c working would be a mighty task in one week with parts delays. Much of my time was spent on the dash assembly. The dash was cracked and no replacement was readily available. So the dash was recovered by the upholstery shop. But this made near impossible to install the stainless trim and other components on the dash. Unfortunately the swing-away steering was left on the car when it went to media blasting. I spent hours trying to get all of the media out to allow the steering wheel to swing."

    "As for the decision to chop the top it was really two things that motivated that. First, Mike and his father wanted to make a convertible out of the car. Second, the top was so rusty you could take a screwdriver and punch holes through the top. So it all came together. Chip asked me about what should be done to reinforce the floors with the top cut off. I told him to add reinforcement to the rockers and that is exactly what was done. The rockers were cut open and channel iron was welded inside the rockers. Then the rockers were closed up. This was one rusty car although when it came to us on the flatbed we thought it would be a cake walk. After the media blasting you could see huge areas of rust out. All of the area under the rear flow through ventilation was rusted out and all of the water accumulated in the trunk."

    "Chip made the decision to replace the 65 tail lights with the 66 tail lights. He also decided to shave the door handles adding a remote control to open the doors. Opening the doors was not a problem. Closing the doors was. All new weather strip was installed and if any of you have done this job you know you are usually in for some modifying to get the doors to close. I don't know if the viewers also noticed the changes to the front bumper. The park/turn signal openings were welded up and round fog lights were added toward the middle of the bumper. So no front turn signals or park lights on this car. "It was a great experience for me to do this show. These guys on the A team really take pride in what they are doing and why there were doing it. I was surprised to see many A team members with wet eyes right along with Mike. I don't believe they could have picked a better mark for this episode."
