Overman King Gainer

Show Summary

In the distant future, mankind is forced to live in domed cities called Domepolis after an environmental cataclysm ravages the Earth's surface. These cities are maintained and supplied by private corporations, but at what cost to the inhabitants living within them? In a Siberian Domepolis, virtual game champion Gainer Sanga is arrested on suspicion of "Exodus", an unauthorised venture beyond the dome walls and strictly prohibited by the government, but why? In prison, he meets Gain Bijou, a mercenary bent on escaping and together the two will lead an Exodus out of the city to a vaunted land known only as Yapan. Opening Song: "King Gainer Over!" by Yoshiki Fukuyama Closing Song: "Can You Feel My Soul" by Himitsugakudan Maboroshi

  • A creative future-world story with some flaws, but an entertaining spirit.

This series opens with the classic theme that humanity has had such deleterious impact on the Earth, they are reduced to living in sealed dome cities. A group assembles to prepare for an Exodus, or a trip outside the domes. Another group, known as the Gainers, prepares to help protect these travelers. It's not explained too clearly why the Gainers are so quick to go against their own misgivings, but that's plot points for you. Somebody has to get things moving. Once the brave expedition is underway, the Gainers are free to go back to their lives of boxing, computer hacking, and other things you'd expect young folks dressed in bizarre French hats would be into. I'll admit there were some parts of this story I didn't quite grasp, and the whole saga couldn't make up its mind whether it wanted to be science fiction, romance, or just another parade of weird costume changes. Stick with it, though, and you'll find likeable characters and plots that don't sit still.moreless
