  • Well...

    8.7
Hm.. this pilot episode it's not that good, from my opinion. If at the beginning I was used with much more interesting and shocking drama, now it's just like, whatever. And this episode is one of those. I can hear all talking that and this, but I don't see the action I'm expecting. Anyway, I still am curious and pretty exciting (not much but still)about what will happen next with the boys, so I'll continue watching OZ. Adebisi and the O'Riley brothers practicaly do the whole show. I think I'm still watching the show only because of them. Ryan is hot by the way (that wasn't necesary to say I know, but I can't shut up..). I hope OZ will regenerate with the future episodes, or else I'll find myself in some very boring moments and watch it very rare. Please don't me do so. Some action boys! Some good action!moreless
  • The Season Four Premiere Episode. And, in my opinion, the best one to date.

    10
I have started watching OZ now, from the very first episode onwards, and this is the first episode I felt compelled to write a review about. Why? Because although this is not the first episode of OZ I truly loved, it is, in my opinion, the best one that I've seen.

The character development, especially for Terry Kinney (Tim McManus) in this episode alone was fantastic. The scene in which Tim finds out from Rita Moreno (Sister Peter Marie) that Edie Falco (Officer Diane Whittlesey) has become engaged to a British 'Bobby' is just wonderful, hysterical and painful all at once. Harold Perrineau (Augustus Hill) is fantastic throughout the entire series (at least in every episode up until the present), but especially in this episode. Ernie Hudson (Warden Leo Glynn) is approached to be the running mate for Governor Devlin, which is somewhat laughable in many ways, being that the two have had some major disagreements in the past. But it appears as though Glynn is interested. Plus, Glynn has a new, undercover narcotics officer in OZ - Moses Deyell.

The major climax in the episode happens in the final 10 minutes, when a new inmate, Lance Reddick (Desmond Mobay) who is being continually ridiculed and humiliated throughout the episode by Kenny Wangler, goes on a killing rampage with a gun that had been planted for him by Simon Adebisi. The shooting rampage is a magnificently directed (and acted) sequence of events. I cannot wait to see what happens next.moreless

    • When Schillinger recieves a picture of his son Hank, he says to Robson he hasn't seen him "not since i came to Oz". with Schillinger's conviction in 92', this conflicts with him telling McMcanus and Mukada about his two sons visiting him in "A Game Of Checkers", season 1's finale, which occured in the summer of 97'.

    • The year of Bevilaqua's conviction is given as 1999, but the character was first referred to in 1998.

  • QUOTES (17)

    • Beecher: I want to stop living every f***ing day in fear.
Keller: That's what being alive is all about, pal.

    • Hill: You may have heard on the news that we've been having a little, uh,
tension around here. Well, after fourteen fun filled days of sitting in your
cells, smelling your roomies farts, a man is ready to forgive everybody for
everything just to come up for air.

    • Guerra:(referring to Alvarez) He's got more lives than a fuckin' cat.

    • (Giles has stabbed Bevilaqua and Alvarez)
      Glynn: Bevilaqua's dead.
      Sister Pete: What about Alvarez?
      Glynn: Intensive care.
Sister Pete: Is he gonna live?
      Glynn: Unfortunately!

    • Hill: Well, whoever you jawing with, they misinformed. I don't do drugs.
      Mobay: No?
Hill: No, not no more, no.
Mobay: Oh, so who do I talk to?
Hill: Just stand still, they'll come to you.

    • Glynn: What's your first step?
Mobay: Making good friends with the bad guys.

    • Glynn: The place might be a mess. My last secretary left in kind of a hurry.
Mobay: Very nice. I can use this to email my Lieutenant, my partner. By the way, I type 85 words a minute.
Glynn: Shit, I might hire you as my secretary for real.
Mobay: If I don't make this bust I'll need the job.

    • Hill: Where you from, man, Jamaica?
      Mobay: Yes.
Hill: How long you been in the states?
      Mobay: Six months.
Hill: What got you sucked into Oz?
Mobay: Are you writing my life story?

    • Wangler: Yo, let me see the gun. Let me see the gun. (Adebisi shows him the gun) Damn! Let me hold it. Let me hold that piece.
(Adebisi puts gun down the front of his pants)
      Adebisi: Come and get it.

    • Bellinger: She was cheating on ya?
Deyell: Yeah ... With her husband.
      Bellinger: They were married?
Deyell: The bitch told me they was through. I don't fuck with another man's wife. I got principles.
Bellinger: Oh, I love a man with principles.

    • Keller: (to Beecher) You know what? Oz didn't make you a bitch. You were born one.

    • Beecher: Chris, sometimes, most times, I wish I could wipe away the past. I wish I could wipe away everything I've done, everything I've said to hurt the people I love. I wish I could look at people and not see all the hurt they cause me, and maybe this is the way to start making that wish come true.
Keller: Are you listening to yourself, man? What are you, Tinkerbell? Wishing on a star?

    • Schillinger: Hey, Beecher, this one's for you.
      Beecher: It's empty.
Schillinger: Yeah. We had to confiscate the contents.
Beecher: A letter from my grandmother? What could have possibly been in here that you had to confiscate it?
Schillinger: Well, if I told you, then you'd know.

    • Glynn: The ME has ruled McCullun's death a suicide. He bit into his skin, chewing off chunks of muscle over the course of a week or so, causing himself to bleed out.
      Sister Pete: Sweet Jesus!
      Murphy: Like a cannibal.
McManus: A cannibal eats somebody else's flesh.
Murphy: So, what do you call a guy that eats his own flesh?
      McManus: Inventive.

    • Hill: (narrating) Congratulations, America. This year, the prison population has reached an all time high, two million. Two million people are, what do you call it? Incarcerated. two-fucking-million. That's the population of Vienna. That's the population of Houston, Texas. The U S of A has 5 percent of the world's population, yet it has 25 percent of the world's prisoners. Whoopee!

    • Dr Nathan: No, absolutely not. I can't even be in the same room with the O'Reily brothers. It makes my skin crawl.
Sister Pete: This is a chance to put the past to rest.
Dr Nathan: I could give a shit about Cyril O'Reily sleeping better. Hell, I'll quadruple his dosage of Valium, maybe he'll sleep permanently.

    • Cyril: The man I hit, is he getting better?
Ryan: Yeah, he'll be fucking fine in about ten minutes. Now go to sleep, Cyril.

  • NOTES (5)

    • Adebisi: If I use the gun then I end up in the Hole, solitary, or death row. No, our goal was to get rid of McManus, remember? To have a black man running Emerald City.
Wangler: Yeah, like you can make that happen.
Adebisi: I can, depending on who I get to shoot the gun, and who gets shot.
      Wangler: I don't understand, man.
Adebisi: Or course you don't, Kenny. Of course you don't.

Wangler is one of the people who ends up getting shot.

    • The HBO site has 3 exclusive "webisodes", which are prequels to Desmond Mobay's arrival in Oz.

    • Music in this episode: Marvin Gaye "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" alb: What's Going On and "I wanna be loved" by Buju Banton.

    • Diane's exit to London was probably a wink to Edie Falco leaving to star in the London production of Side Man.

    • Crime Flashbacks

While driving, Louis Bevilaqua is shot at by men in another car. The woman in his car is shot several times, the other car crashes. Bevilaqua walks to the other car's wreckage, shooting the driver as he struggles to get out with the help of a bystander.

Moses Deyell breaks into the apartment of his girlfriend and her husband as they make love. He shoots her husband, and then gives her a goodbye kiss before shooting her.
