In the 12th episode of the first season of this nostalgic ABC series that looks at the airline industry in 1963, the Pan Am crew continues their personal ups and downs. Maggie Ryan (Christina Ricci) discusses her concerns about Amanda (Ashley Greene) with Ted (Michael Mosley). Dean (Mike Vogel) gets stopped by customs officials who are searching for smugglers.

"New Frontiers" is one of the stronger episodes of the season. However it is not without its problems. I believe it was pretty obvious that the stranger courting Collette was not some evildoer as Dean was convinced he was. That is an old plot device usually reserved for late seventies sitcoms. It was also just as obvious that Laura would get over her regret of posing topless for the pictures and even be proud of posing for them. Despite all of that there are things to like about this episode. The best thing is when Dean punches Broyles' lights out. Broyles is an extremely dislikeable character to begin with so it was good to see him get what he deserved. What would be even better is if Dean turned him into Pan Am in a future episode. What I also liked was seeing Maggie having the guts to stand up to Broyles and refuse to join his smuggling ring regardless of the consequences. "Pan Am" seems to be holding it's own. Hopefully it can carry this momentum through season's end (Despite the fact that there will probably not be a second season.)moreless
