Paper Dolls

Show Summary

During the mid-1980s, prime-time soaps ruled the airwaves and ABC, which already had a hit with Dynasty, tried again with Paper Dolls. Unfortunately, this attempt was less successful and Paper Dolls was cancelled after three months. The show was based on a 1982 TV movie, which centered around the modeling business and the corruption of two beautiful and innocent teenage models Taryn and Laurie. However, in the transition to a weekly series, the focus was split between the modeling business and the Harper family whose wealthy conglomerate had a small stake in the modeling business. As a result, the show was diluted with too many characters and convoluting plotlines for viewers to get invested. The original two-hour episode aired opposite the 1984 Prime Time Emmy Awards and scored decent ratings, however, subsequent episodes failed to live up to the ratings potential and the show quietly went off the air before resolving any plotlines. Interestingly enough, the two actresses who played the teen models in the series, Terry Farrell and Nicollette Sheridan, later appeared in more successful series. Farrell co-starred in both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Becker, while Sheridan enjoyed a seven-year stint as Paige on Knots Landing and is currently playing Edie on Desperate Housewives.moreless

  • I get a funny feeling whenever I watch Paper Dolls on tv.

I get a funny feeling whenever I watch Paper Dolls on tv. It sends a chill up my spine in a way that I can't quite describe. This time, it's no exception. When I picked this up during my visit to Blockbuster, I knew I was in for a treat as I have been so many times felt before. I was right! If you haven't gotten this yet, beg, steal, buy or do whatever you need to get it. You won't regret it.moreless

  • So bad it's good...

Okay this is not the best show to ever be on television, but it's certainly not the worst. There was something about this show when I first saw it on SoapNet last year that made me keep tuning in. Perhaps it was the fact that with a cast that had so much talent (Mimi Rogers, Lloyd Bridges, and Brenda Vaccarro-- for starters), the writing just wasn't there.

I actually think that Nicollette Sheridan and Terry Farrell where really great in their roles as Taryn Blake, the washed out model and Laurie Caswell, the up and coming star. Although, they were both really young, they clearly knew how to act which is something you rarely see on any television show with young people in any decade.

The storylines were pretty blah. Sometimes, it focused a tad bit too much on Morgan Fairchild's character Racine and how she and Wesley Harper where trying to overthrough his father and brother-in-law. However, the problem with the show was it worked well as a television movie, and might have worked as a limited series, but as a television show in general, it couldn't have worked at all.

However, if you see it on SoapNet, you should take a look, if only for the camp value alone.

  • True camp

Paper Dolls was campy trash and that's about the nicest thing one can say about it. Considering the talent involved in this show-Lloyd Bridges, Mimi Rogers, Nicollette Sheridan, Jennifer Warren, Dack Rambo, Richard Beymer, Brenda Vacarro, Terry Farrell, Lauren Hutton and of course Morgan Fairchild as Racine-this show should have been a lot better. Still, I watched this show until the bitter end only to be left with a cliffhanger. But I'm a sucker for any kind of soap that Morgan Fairchild does because she is always playing over-the-top characters and can always be counted on for a laugh. I wish she could be on a HIT show for once (she did do a single season of Falcon Crest). But it's nice that SoapNet is airing this show again.moreless
