The appalling Sylvia is very cleverly played by Rebecca Hall, who makes her ability to twist people around her little finger very credible, but the emphasis on her is damaging to the totality of this adaptation. There's far too much of Sylvia and not enough of her diametric opposite, the "new woman" Valentine Wannop. This episode (mostly) takes us out of England and most of the star names who have played bit parts in earlier episodes are missing. Roger Allam thus has no difficulty in stealing all the acting honors as the buffoonish General Campion - a character who never becomes a mere caricature, however, and is only too believable.moreless
