  • The end of the war finally brings an end to Tietjens's domestic problems, though not without sacrifice.

The symbolism of the "great Groby tree" - the massive, ancient oak standing outside the Tietjens family home in the country - is pretty obvious, but, in this final episode, it works. The end of the war coincides with Sylvia electing, in her husband's absence, to cut down the tree; and with its loss, Tietjens finally decides to cut his ties with the past it represents and move into the new world of post-war England. Happily, this also finally decides him to leave the ghastly Sylvia and to embrace the new life embodied by the long-suffering, ever-patient Valentine. By cutting down the tree, Sylvia has also cut off her last chance of regaining her husband, who remains a chivalrous man, by his own lights, but is now a modern one instead of the anachronistic fellow he had been. Having been so out of step, he is, now, as a result of surviving his horrible experiences, the one truly modern man in the story, and the one truest to himself. The ending of this hugely uneven series works perfectly; but one might wish that getting to it hadn't been such a tortuous journey.moreless
