Tietjens finds himself sent to the front at last, and is later injured. At war's end, he must return to England and decide between Sylvia and Valentine.
At Rouen, an exhausted Christopher receives a visit from Sylvia, which has unfortunate effects.
Tietjens is the subject of much slanderous gossip (partly as a result of Sylvia's foolishness), and his military career in World War I is held back as a result. His father abruptly commits suicide.
Unhappily reconciled with Sylvia, Tietjens resigns his job at the outbreak of war and joins the army.
