Tom's real name is revealed to be Darwish Sabir Ishmael Gani, but he changed it for his political career.
As Leslie's night of surreptitiously stalking Mark and Ann ended, the radio began playing "Every Breath You Take" by The Police; a song about a stalker.
Leslie: Where did the name Haverford come from?
Tom: My birth name is Darwish Sabir Ishmael Gani, and I changed it to Tom Haverford because, you know, brown guys with funny sounding Muslim names don't really make it far in politics.
Leslie: What about Barack Obama?
Tom: Okay, yeah, fine, Barack Obama. If I knew a dude named Barack Obama was going to be elected president, yeah, maybe I wouldn't have changed it.
Leslie: I would like to be president one day, so no, I have not smoked marijuana. I ate a brownie once...at a party in college. It was intense.
Tom: Whenever Leslie asks me for the Latin names of any of our plants, I just give her the names of rappers.
Sargeant David Sanderson: (after Tom was arrested) Look, Miss Knope...it wasn't just his behavior, okay? I think your friend might be some kind of a pervert. Leslie: Look, that's what people think when they first meet him, but he's all talk.
Andy: There's weed down there? I thought that was the tops of carrots.
Ron: I have a hernia. April: Do you have syphilis? Ron: I said I have a hernia. April: I know. It's possible to have two things at once.
Music: Every Breath You Take (The Police)

When Tom was arrested for breaking into his own van, the scene was a nod to the incident when Harvard professor Henry Gates was arrested for breaking into his own house.
