This series was a platform for Paul Merton to show that he could perform in sketch comedy just as well as he could on panel and improv shows. And while the show can't quite be put up to the standard that Paul set himself on those shows, it was an interesting and entertaining sketch show, which like a lot of shows at the time dipped into the surreal on many occasions. The show would usually be conducted from a news stand where Paul sold a variety of things to different customers (who often would be surreal things themselves, such as a dolphin). While at this stand, Paul would do some standup, usually resulting in a number of witty one liners. The sketches were of course completely off the wall, often making no sense at all. For example, one sketch see's Paul have a game of chess where each time they go through a tunnel, something changes, and by the end of the game Paul's opponent has turned into Bob Holness. Another sketch see's Paul have a number of weird dreams, but by the end it becomes apparent that it was his cat that had been having the dreams all along. Overall, while not the best sketch show ever, it is still great stuff for those of you who are fans of both Paul Merton and the surreal, and well worth tracking down if you get the chance.moreless
