  • Quotes

    • Selman: And we're starting to wake up, cuz we've been silent too long and sleeping. I mean, as we're sleeping, these people are walking into our homes and stealing our liberty and we're not gonna let 'em do it anymore.

    • Penn: Whether intelligent design makes sense to you, or sounds just f*cking crazy DOESN'T MATTER. IT'S JUST. NOT. SCIENCE.

    • Mattson: In a history class, you don't hear people asking for balance between those who say that the Holocaust happened compared to those who say it didn't happen.

    • Feldman: I'm very passionate about this because, as a Christian myself and as a teacher, I want to see things in school taught.

Penn: Uh...she means "taught in school".

    • Scott: Science is not a democratic process. Scientists don't line up and say "Gee we really like this theory, let's all vote for it". That's not how it works.

    • Penn: [on Selman] How bad does the world have to be for a NEW YORKER to be the voice of reason???

    • Selman: Spin works, and these guys have learned it to give their religious creationism spin so it looks like science. It's not. It's a duck, and the emperor's naked.

    • Penn: These a**holes don't even REALLY know what the word "theory" means, in a scientific context. It doesn't mean "guess". You know, that the earth goes around the sun? That's a theory, too. And that too is contradicted by the Bible. I guess they're thinking "one step at a time".

    • Penn: Don't try to bullsh** a bullsh**er! Just because he doesn't say "God" doesn't mean he's not talking religion.

    • Penn: Okay, so here's my point. As Charles Darwin wrote, "It is interesting to contemplate an entangled bank clothed with many plants of many kinds, with birds singing in the bushes and various insects flitting about, and with worms crawling through the damp earth, and to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, so different from each other and yet so dependent on each other in so complex a manner have all been produced by laws acting around us. Thus from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object we are capable of conceiving, namely the production of higher animals, directly follows." There's a grandeur in this view of life. Richard Dawkins's short description is "Life results from the non-random survival of randomly varying replicators." Okay, now what's the creationist argument?

Teller: [hits Penn in the head with a bible]

  • Notes

    • It should be noted that, in 2005, Jeff Selman, via the ACLU, challenged the right of the creationists and the school board of Marietta to place the stickers in the textbooks. A federal judge would agree on the grounds of it being an intrusion by organized religion on the public school system of Georgia.
