Pensacola: Wings of Gold

Show Summary

Lt. Colonel Bill Kelly takes over the Sea Dragons, a 4 person unit consisting of a fighter pilot, a helo (helicopter) pilot, an electronics specialist and an explosives expert. And he tries to reconnect with his estranged teen age daughter. In season two the show was revamped and only Kelly's character remained. He took over a unit training fighter pilots and the show used elements the movies Top Gun and An Officer and A Gentleman. His daughter had gone off to college and three student pilots, his XO and a widowed barkeep, were added as new regulars.

In season 3 the show was revamped yet again and Kelly commanded a unit consisting of several of the student pilots from season 2, and two new characters who were helicopter pilots. His XO was now his equal in rank and was in the staff of the larger unit that Kelly's unit was part of.

  • Pensacola Wings of Gold was the best military show on TV. James Brolin was was great. Liked the show better the second season. When I buy a DVD of the shows?moreless

Great Show. I am a former crewmember of the supercarrier, USS SARATOGA CVA60 and loved every episode of PWOG. James Brolin was great in the show and it had an outstanding cast. It was very realistic and I liked it better than JAG and I saw every eposide of JAG ever made.

Where can I buy a DVD of a season of PWOG? I would like to buy a DVD of all the seasons. Why was the show taken off TV. I really, really miss it. The episodes that were filmed on an aircraft,of course, were my favorites. The two part show on carrier qualifications was excellent.moreless
  • Show about Marines and Navy personel.

I like this show, when it was on, and do dearly miss it. I think now is the time for positive military shows and I think many people would appreciate it. The first season followed a group of Navy and Marines as they form an elite fighting unit. The second and third season follows Navy pilots exclusivly. The show ended with the Mother of All Cliffhangers and I want to know what happened!moreless
  • A bit confusing, if you’ve actually been there

I quite liked this show. The stories could be a bit pretentious at time, and Barbara Striesand’s husband needs to not take himself so dang seriously, but one thing bugged me about this show.

The show was filmed in San Diego, California, but set in Pensacola, Florida. Having lived in both of theses cities, I can say it would take a lot of skillful camera work and post-production work to make one of these cities pass for the other. The terrain they fly over, the background scenery the buildings and more are all wrong.

The question that comes to mind is, if you are going to film a show in San Diego, a bastion of Naval Aviation, why not set the show in San Diego? Nothing as to story would be lost if it was taking place in San Diego, rather than San Diego pretending to be Pensacola. Over the course of the series, thousands of dollars could have been saved merely by not trying to hide the fact that it is filmed on the Pacific Coast, not the Gulf Cast. And San Diego locations could be better utilized without redressing them to try to make them pass for Pensacola.
