  • A new season, a horrible ex, and more delusions

    7.0
Perception returns with Daniel on medication for his condition that seems to be completely under control and he's begun to date his psychologist (who he modeled his hallucinatory girlfriend Natalie off of for years). The season opener, however, puts new stress on the Doc as side-effects to his medication cause him to lower the dose, that plus being called into testify at a trial push the return of the man's hallucinatory method of helping the FBI solve their latest case.

"Ch-Ch-Changes" also introduces Scott Wolf as Kate's soon-to-be ex-husband (a real dick that shows no signs of why someone like Kate would marry him). The Assistant DA uses Daniel for a medical competency hearing of a conviction murderer who Daniel discovers is actually a completely different person following his attempted suicide and brain damage.

The defense using Daniel's testimony against the state is a nice touch, as is the ADA's only recourse of trying to discredit his own expert on the stand. The episode also leaves us with quite a few questions about how real Daniel's relationship to his psychologist really is, and how far he's let himself get sucked back into his own delusions yet again.

    • Daniel: Is our personality genetically preprogrammed or is it malleable? The science of neuroplasticity suggest that our brain has the ability to change and grow throughout our life. In essence, our experiences rewire us. They can make us do or think things previously undo-able or unthinkable. They can provoke us into forming new thoughts and ideas, and they can teach us valuable lessons, making us less incline to repeat the mistakes of our past. The brain is in a constant state of flux, suggesting that nothing in life is permanent. And yet, as they say, "The more the things change, the more they stay the same".
