- The producers obviously decided to Matlock the series a bit after the disastrous TCOT Wicked Wives and hence Hal Holbrook is cast as homespun attorney Bill McKenzie. Not surprising since many of the Perry Mason writers, directors, and producers also worked on Matlock when it was in production on NBC.
