This episode captures the interest at the outset with tension filled repartee in a gothic family setting worthy of Ethan Frome. The tension extends to Perry's briefing of Paul Drake, as Paul asks Perry to confine himself to "two thoughts at a time". All the familar elements of a Perry Mason episode appear in due course, but with many a twist. There is no arrest, and no courtroom scene. Instead, Hamilton Burger appears in Perry's office on a "personal visit" to discuss the developing case. The denouement is played out in a setting that seems fitting for an Agatha Christie story. With memorable characterizations by Louise Latham, Allan Melvin, Lloyd Cardigan, and Percy Helton, this episode is a must see for Perry Mason afficionados of all stripes.
