Episode Summary

The Case of the Dead Ringer
Perry loses a case at the beginning of this episode. Actually, it's a civil case involving a patent dispute and he lost because the opposition led the jury to believe that Perry paid a witness to change his testimony. How did this happen? A merchant seaman named Grimes was paid to impersonate Perry and passed an envelope to a key witness. Grimes, it seems, is a dead ringer for Mason. The civil case soon turns into a criminal one when the winning party in the patent dispute is murdered.moreless

    • TRIVIA (1)

    • QUOTES (2)

      • Perry: You know, I can still hear him in the courtroom, laughing at everyone. "Which one of you ain't posin' and playactin'?" You know, there's a lot of truth in that.
Drumm: Ah-ha. A lawyer's weakness. Empathizing with a criminal despite himself.

      • Clay: Gentlemen, being in a ship is being in jail with a chance of drowning. A man in jail has more room, better food, and commonly better company.
        Drumm: Now who said that?
        Clay: I said that.
Perry: Yes, but Samuel Johnson said it two hundred years before you did.
Clay: Great minds frequently trod the same path.
