This, the first episode of Perry Mason, is a real cliffhanger. Perry drives to the scene of a shooting and finds the police recovering the body of Harry Merrill from a car that went over the side of a mountain. MerriIl has a bullet in his body and a pillowcase over his head. This is a coincidence, because Perry's client Evelyn Bagby, claims she was chased by a hooded man in a car near the same cliff that day. She fired two shots at the man's car to scare him off, and now the police want her for murder.

The character of Sgt. Holcomb (who appears briefly here in the premiere episode) was Perry's primary police detective antagonist in all of the early novels. The character of Lt. Arthur Tragg did not appear until TCOT Empty Tin which was published in 1940. The Lt. Tragg of the novels was quite different than the one we see in the series. For one thing, he was a much younger man than the crusty old coot portrayed on the series by Ray Collins.
We get a good idea of the configuration of Perry's office: reception area, Della's office, Perry's personal office, and the law library. We also briefly see Perry's living room and Paul Drake's living room with a fireplace as he is playing cards with his friends.
