Show Summary

Persona is a beautifully-crafted, thought-provoking 1960's film written and directed by perennial Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman (The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Fanny and Alexander) who seamlessly sews beauty with horror in this story of two women forced to live in an emotionally oppressive environment. The film was made using a minimal amount of props and mediums - black and white images are juxtaposed against beaming rays of light, and the actors don't wear any makeup. Persona follows Alma (Bibi Andersson), a nurse whose newest assignment requires her to take care of a psychologically distraught actress named Elisabet (Liv Ullman) who has suddenly lost the ability to speak. In an effort to achieve the most effective treatment, Alma and Elisabet travel to a cottage by the sea where they set camp and ruminate in thought. Alma psychoanalyzes Elisabet through several conversations - but the mute patient seemingly reciprocates similar services, though she doesn't speak much. The stark contrasts between Alma and Elisabet begin to fade as they spend more time in isolation together. Is Elisabet's treatment process worse than the affliction she suffers from? Persona has an ineffable depth one can only experience by watching the film in its entirety. One of Bergman's greatest feats.moreless
