  • Streetcar Jones didn't dig the dead man, but did he kill him? Not cool.

There's precious little substance in these early episodes of "Peter Gunn" - the plots don't even stretch to twenty-five minutes, and here we never even see how Gunn solves it, it's all wrapped up in a moment of conversation. (And why didn't the police find that out, anyway?) What counts is the music and the style - lots of jazz in place of conventional action, sharp suits for the men and smart talk for the ladies, and some striking images conjured by director Blake Edwards(far better than the American TV average in the 50s). This episode has fine acting from movie old-timer Leigh Whipper and a rare performance by Carlo Fiore, who liked to claim he was Marlon Brando's best friend.moreless
