I had the good fortune to play a jury member on this episode. (My friend's girl friend's mother was in in charge of casting for "Old Tucson" and other film/TV projects being shot in and around Tucson back then). We both got non-talking parts and spent two days on the set while the courtroom scenes were shot. Being born in '49 and raised on westerns, I recognized the guest star, Strother Martin, immediately. He was one of those character actors that had appeared in supporting roles on hundreds of films and TV episodes. It was obvious that Petrocelli's stars knew him too... they sort of behaved like a legend was on the set and unfailingly turned their attention to him was his dialogue angles were being shot. I'm not a pro, but I could tell I was watching an old master. He simply oozed distinctive nuance with every sentence and every facial expression. And yet he made it seem natural and effortless. And yet once the scene was cut, he reverted back to a smiling, friendly ordinary guy. What a gem. I could tell Barry Newman enjoyed him being there and studied him carefully. Of course, it gave me a whole new appreciation of those secondary players called character actors. So often they bring years of experience to each project, yet their names go largely unrecognized by the general audience.moreless
